In 1971 war, torpedoed by Pakistani submarine PNS Hangor, INS Khukri sank within minutes, 176 sailors and 18 officers made the supreme sacrifice. Last seen helping his men so they might to live to see another day was Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla who chose to go down with the ship disregarding the option of saving his own life, following the old military tradition where "Captains dont abandon their ships, no matter what".
