This weekend was a difficult one. Right now, families are mourning loved ones or helping them recover from injuries. The pain caused by gun violence is unimaginable. I have every confidence in the Toronto Police and have spoken to the Federal Public Safety Minister, urging him to work with his American counterpart to stem the flow of illegal guns into our streets. The spirit of Toronto is resilient. We will not let reckless criminals stop our tradition of outdoor street festivals.

The violent attack at Congregation Chasedei Bobov was a disgusting antisemitic hate crime. I want to thank Toronto Police for making a swift arrest. I also want to thank the congregation for welcoming me today and giving me the space to listen. Toronto is a city where everyone must be free to practice their faith and live without fear. An attack on one community is an attack on all of us. We all have a responsibility to stand against hate and I will always stand with Toronto’s Jewish community.

The current state of snow removal is unacceptable. While moving mountains of snow takes time, we must do better. This morning, I sent a letter to the City Manager and Auditor General urging improvements to the city's snow plowing and removal policies.

Today, I joined Nate to announce a landmark partnership of $2.55 billion in low-cost financing to start construction of thousands of homes. The City is also putting in financial incentives such as relief from development charges, fees and property taxes.

Our shelters are full, and thousands are on the waitlist for social housing. Today, I joined PARC and Councillor Gord Perks in Parkdale to break ground on new affordable, supportive housing. It’s a start, but there’s much more to do in 2025 and beyond.

For 10+ years, we have seen our infrastructure deteriorate. That stops now. We were not fixing what needed to be done and fallen behind in repairs by $26 billion. Today, we announced that we have cut that amount by 30% — but there is more work to do.

I joined officers from 43 Division in Scarborough for a ride-along to see the work they do up close. At a local strip mall, every shop owner knew the Neighbourhood Community Officers’ names. “We always get help.” That trust makes communities safer. We’re expanding the NCO model with the Toronto Police, including on the TTC. Alongside mental health workers, outreach teams, and special constables, they’re working together to prevent crime and provide help when it’s needed. It’s working. We’re building a safer Toronto. Thank you 43 Division Toronto Police Toronto Police Association for organizing this ride-along!

Emancipation Day is as a powerful reminder of the dehumanizing history of slavery. Its also a day for celebrating the resilience and fortitude of all the abolitionists, especially the Black individuals and communities, who worked tirelessly to abolish this heinous institution.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the new Spirit Garden at Nathan Phillips Square is opening. It's a space to honour residential school survivors and remember the children who didn’t make it home — a space to come together to learn, share, teach, and heal.
