The Financial Times has published what it calls a "visual investigation" on Xinjiang. And the timing is interesting. Shortly afterward, the US Department of Homeland Security announced it had added over 40 Chinese entities to the so-called "Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List". As we read through the piece, we quickly noticed something familiar: the same author, the same "experts", and the same playbook. Satellite imagery presented as "evidence". Speculation packaged as fact. Anonymous sources used to support sweeping conclusions. The deeper we dug, the more familiar it became. Many of the claims, sources, and narratives were nearly identical to those we've examined and challenged for years. In fact, some of our previous fact-checks could be republished today to debunk the FT piece. Yet despite years of scrutiny, these stories continue to find an audience in the West. So we decided to examine them once again. A Western "scholar", Darren Byler, published a paper accusing China of "producing Uygur terrorist worker" through digital surveillance in 2021. To support this claim, he used three paintings of Xinjiang painters without permission, stripped them of contexts, and misrepresented them to match his political agenda. The three painters were furious about this and took legal measures to protect their rights. In January 2025, Taylor & Francis issued a rare correction. The paintings Byler had appropriated were removed, along with all captions and references. Byler himself has not yet made an official apology, but the painters will continue to fight for their rights. This case sets a precedent: you cannot distort facts and strip context to serve a political agenda. Xinjiang is not a blank canvas for Western defamation.
