North America had a copper industry 9,000 years ago. But this is as early as utilitarian copper-tool production anywhere in the world. Around the Great Lakes, Indigenous communities mined nearly pure copper and transformed it into tools, weapons and ornaments. Thousands of ancient mining pits remain.
