One year ago today, Charlie was at a pro-life event in Visalia, California, where a packed house turned out to hear him speak. Charlie didn’t just speak on college campuses. He was constantly on the road speaking at churches, rallies, conferences, practically anywhere that he could further the conservative movement, preach the gospel, and inspire people to fight for liberty. He was relentless in the pursuit of people. At that same event, Charlie and I spent over an hour backstage with Isabel Brown . Most of that time was spent talking about Christ, the Bible, the Church, and faith. There was something different about him that day in Fresno. He was usually running from one thing to the next and rarely took the time to just sit and talk. But that day, he seemed calm and content. He talked endlessly about his love for the Lord and his desire to know everything He could about His Savior. The three of us discussed the mysteries of the faith and the questions that we wished we had the answers to. And now, I can’t help but think that Charlie is finally experiencing the answers to all those questions we sat there wondering about together. Charlie lived out his faith courageously, and he died at the peak of it. What a blessing it is to be able to say that about someone. I just picture him talking with the Lord now, even more calm and content than he was that day in California.

It was a dream of his to walk on that field, take in the history of one of Americas most iconic ballparks, and experience it all as a lifelong Cubs fan. He was so happy. I think about this day a lot and go back to it in my mind all the time.

One of my favorite stories from our last night in Tokyo happened just before Charlie was supposed to take the stage. A local pastor pulled him aside and cautioned him about talking too much about Christianity. “Japan is not a particularly a Christian country.” So, naturally, one of the first things Charlie did when he walked on stage was proclaim the name of Jesus Christ. He told the crowd how important his faith was to him and made no attempt to water it down. And instead of getting upset or walking out, the crowd cheered. That was Charlie. It didn’t matter what country he was in, who was in the audience, or whether proclaiming his faith was considered popular. He was never going to hide the most important part of who he was.

I woke up this morning and the first thought in my mind was, “It’s officially been a year.” For the past year, my phone has constantly shown me “one year ago today” memories with Charlie. A flight we were on. A campus or church we were at. A conversation we had. A hilarious moment I’d forgotten about. Funny videos. So many memories. Almost every day, there was another reminder of where we were and what we were doing together exactly one year before. But this morning… I realized I won’t have those anymore. There is no longer going to be a “one year ago today” with Charlie waiting for me tomorrow. It’s officially been a year. This realization hit me so unbelievably hard. My heart is broken. For the last 365 days, those memories have felt like little windows back into a life that somehow still felt close enough to touch. Now the calendar keeps moving, even though part of me so wishes it wouldn’t. I’m longing for and looking to the reunion of eternity with our Savior. Where nothing, not even time, can ever separate again. I’m incredibly grateful for every photo, every video, every text, every trip, every ordinary moment I didn’t know at the time would become something I clung to and treasured so deeply. I miss my friend. I miss him so beyond explanation. Today, more than anything, I’m just so grateful to God I got to know him.

Charlie was blown away by how clean, safe, orderly, and beautiful South Korea was. He kept saying, “America could be just as clean and beautiful.” He loved seeing what was possible when a country took pride in its communities and public spaces. It was such a testament to how much Charlie loved America… That even on the other side of the world, he was always thinking about how to make America better.

Then, together, they sang “How Great Is Our God.” I’ll never forget watching Charlie take it all in. For someone who spent so much of his life speaking to massive crowds, this moment was different. He wasn’t there to give a speech or make a political argument. He was simply standing among thousands of fellow believers, worshiping the Lord. Afterward, on our way to the airport, Charlie looked at me and said, “Wow, that was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.” I think about those words a lot now.
