Most people stop at “would a gun even fire in space?” That’s the least interesting part. A modern cartridge brings its own oxidizer. The chemistry works fine in vacuum. The real physics starts the moment the bullet leaves the barrel. You’re already moving at orbital speed. The bullet inherits that velocity and then gets an extra few hundred metres per second in whatever direction you aimed. Fired forward, it climbs into a higher orbit on the opposite side of Earth. Fired backward, its perigee drops. Fired sideways, it ends up on a different inclination. In every case the bullet is no longer a projectile. It’s a tiny, unguided satellite. At the same time, conservation of momentum gives you a small but permanent velocity change in the opposite direction. One trigger pull, two new orbits. Newton sketched the same idea centuries ago with a cannon on a mountain. Give the cannonball enough sideways speed and the ground falls away as fast as the ball falls toward it. That’s orbit. A rifle in low Earth orbit is just a very small, very fast version of the same experiment. In 1975 the Soviets actually ran a version of it. An unmanned military station fired a cannon in orbit shortly before it was deorbited. The principle has already been demonstrated. So the question isn’t whether the gun works. It’s whether you’d be willing to turn yourself and a single bullet into two slightly different pieces of orbital debris with one pull of the trigger.
