Mount Vernon is the historic home of America’s first president, George Washington. It is located in Northern Virginia.

In 1799, 317 enslaved men, women, and children made up more than 90% of Mount Vernon's population. George and Martha Washington's lives depended on their labor to keep the estate self-sufficient. The majority of the enslaved were laborers who performed agricultural work on the estate’s four outlying farms. Others worked in the Mansion as butlers, cooks, waiters, and housemaids, while many were trained in specialized trades, including carpentry, blacksmithing, and textile production. Most never had the opportunity to become literate and left no written documents. Much of what we know about their lives therefore comes from Washington’s records, archaeological evidence, and oral histories passed down by their descendants. Doll was thirty-eight years old when she arrived at Mount Vernon in 1759. She and her children were among the more than 80 enslaved people whom Martha Dandridge Custis brought to her marriage to George Washington, as part of her “dower” or widow’s share of her first husband’s estate. As the estate’s cook for many years, Doll worked long hours in the kitchen preparing the hoecakes, smoked hams, and other Washington family favorites. She also was skilled at preserving cherries and other berries for future use. During our cellar renovation, we found storage pits of bottles still filled with fruit! Read more about the discovery:
