ZAMFARA @ 30: FROM SURVIVAL TO RESCUE Thirty years ago today, Zamfara was carved out of old Sokoto State. The founding idea was simple: a farming state that could feed itself, keep its markets open, and give its people a fair shot. For most of those years, that idea stalled. Schools crumbled, hospitals ran empty, gratuities piled up unpaid, and banditry pushed farmers off their land. The motto, “Farming is Our Pride,” stayed on paper. The break came in 2023, when Dauda Lawal took office on a Rescue Mission and started spending where the neglect was worst. In Bukkuyum, often discussed only for insecurity, ₦4 billion is going into the 23km Mallamawa–Zarummai–Bukkuyum road, with a spur to Zarummai Masama, plus ₦1.5 billion for the Bukkuyum–Birnin Zuama–Gummi road. Maradun has ₦5 billion for Maradun–Magami–Faru and ₦1 billion for Maradun–Makera. Bungudu has ₦10 billion on the Daza–Gidan Dawa link to the Sokoto Road dual carriageway, and ₦500 million for the 21km Tasha Babba–Lambar Kyambarawa road. Birnin Magaji has ₦10 billion for 53km of Gusau–Jauri–Dogon Kade–Nasarawa Mailayi–Nasarawar Godal roads. Tsafe holds the longest road project in the state’s history: 95km from Yandoton Daji through Chediya, Doka, Yan Waren Daji, Hayin Alhaji, Bedi, Unguwar Joji and Yankuzo to Tsafe, at ₦10 billion. Another ₦5 billion covers emergency roads across the three senatorial zones. Gusau is being rebuilt as a capital, not an outpost: dualised inner roads, underground drainage against flooding, and solar streetlights on major avenues. The Gusau International Airport, started on 18 June 2024, is the flagship. In May 2026 the first Hajj flight left Gusau, a Max Air aircraft carrying 415 pilgrims straight to Saudi Arabia. Before then, pilgrims travelled to Sokoto or Kano. The trip from Gusau now takes less than four hours. An anniversary committee, inaugurated in September 2026 and chaired by Deputy Governor Mani Mumuni, is marking the journey from creation to this turn. At 30, the claim is no longer a slogan. Roads, an airport, and capital pushed into places long written off are the evidence that 1996’s promise is finally getting a foundation.
