May 10, 1992: LSU center Shaquille O'Neal breaks a backboard at Sports Club Los Angeles while playing one-on-one with NBC's Ahmad Rashad for "NBA Inside Stuff." 45 days later, O'Neal was drafted by the Orlando Magic with the 1st overall pick in the NBA draft.

May 5, 1994: "Let's get ready to Mutombo!" Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway pumps up the McNichols Sports Arena crowd prior to Game 4 of the Nuggets' first round series with the top-seeded Seattle SuperSonics. Denver won in OT, 94-85, and forced a series-deciding Game 5.

May we never forget that 23 years ago on Christmas Day, ABC’s holiday gift to NBA fans was the Floor Cam—quite easily the worst vantage point possible for watching basketball.

March 29, 1995: San Antonio’s Sean Elliott dunks on Vlade Divac. Elliott scored 13 PTS and David Robinson had 30 PTS/16 REB/5 BLK in the Spurs' 107-84 win over the Lakers. Divac had 11 PTS/14 REB for Los Angeles.

February 24, 1994: Deion Sanders and David Justice of the Atlanta Braves comment on the Atlanta Hawks having just traded Dominique Wilkins to the Los Angeles Clippers. 📺 ESPN

40 years ago today: Dirk Minniefield of Kentucky nearly jumps out of Rupp Arena for a dunk against Mississippi State. Wildcats 88, Bulldogs 67 February 8, 1983.

May 10, 1980: Julius Erving of the Philadelphia 76ers makes the first 3-point shot in NBA Finals history, with 3:22 remaining in the fourth quarter of Game 3. It was the only 3-pointer made by either team in the six-game series. The Los Angeles Lakers won Game 3, 111-101.

February 14, 1982: The University of Georgia's Dominique Wilkins blocks James Worthy of North Carolina. Wilkins was called for goaltending. I'm posting the clip anyway. Tar Heels 66, Bulldogs 57.

March 16, 1990: This pass from Detroit's Joe Dumars to Dennis Rodman in Chicago. Dumars also scored 19 PTS and James Edwards added 21 PTS in the Pistons' 106-81 win. Michael Jordan had 20 PTS/8 REB/7 AST for the Bulls.

January 8, 1978: A 60-foot underhand pass from New Orleans’ Pete Maravich to Gail Goodrich in Portland. Trail Blazers 122, Jazz 100.

July 29, 2002: The Cavaliers trade Andre Miller and Bryant Stith to the Clippers for Darius Miles (and Harold Jamison), who "will play on a bad team trying to come in last and get the first overall pick in 2003—which will be LeBron James, the kid out of high school." 📺 KHSL-TV

Denver fans publicly announce Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s dietary choices during Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. Abdul-Jabbar (who later admitted he does, in fact, EAT QUICHE) scored 27 PTS. Lakers 136, Nuggets 118 May 17, 1985.

June 7, 1990: Clyde Drexler’s first-quarter slam dunk during Portland's 106-105 overtime win at Detroit in Game 2 of the NBA Finals. Drexler led the Trail Blazers with 33 PTS (13-20 FG). Bill Laimbeer scored 26 PTS (6-9 3P) to lead the Pistons.

December 29, 1999: Seattle's Brent Barry is called for a Flagrant 1 after fouling his older brother, Sacramento's Jon Barry. Brent finished with 24 PTS/9 REB/5 AST/5 STL, but Jon (14 PTS/6 AST/4 STL) and the Kings defeated the SuperSonics, 113-104. 📺 CNN World Sport

March 25, 1983: Houston’s Clyde Drexler dunks over Andre Turner of Memphis State during the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinal. Drexler finished with six steals and teammate Akeem Abdul Olajuwon scored 21 PTS in the Cougars' 70-63 win over the Tigers.

May 23, 1994: The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly being sold for $152.5 million and moved to New Orleans, where they would be renamed the "Rhythm" or the "Angels." The Rhythm/Angels would play home games in the Superdome during the 1994-95 NBA season.

February 18, 2004: Rasheed Wallace plays in his one and only game with the Atlanta Hawks, finishing with 20 PTS/6 REB/5 BLK in a 98-92 loss at New Jersey. The next day, Wallace was traded to Detroit—where he played 45 games before winning an NBA championship with the Pistons.

September 1, 2006: Greece defeats the United States, 101-95, in the FIBA World Cup semifinals in Saitama, Japan. Vassilis Spanoulis led Greece (8-0) with 22 PTS. For Team USA (7-1), Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 27 PTS, Dwyane Wade had 19 PTS and LeBron James added 17 PTS.

The moment ESPN’s Bob Ley (via Darren Rovell) broke the news to a live TV audience (and Sonny Vaccaro) that LeBron James decided to sign with Nike. Vaccaro, Adidas' director of basketball, was a guest on this late night/early morning episode of “Outside the Lines.” May 22, 2003

May 26, 1977: Portland's Maurice Lucas and Philadelphia's Darryl Dawkins are ejected for their roles in a 4th-quarter fight during Game 2 of the NBA Finals. Both players were later fined $2,500 each and given conduct warnings via telegram from NBA Commissioner Larry O'Brien.

June 14, 1995: Bob Costas reports that Dominique Wilkins "will probably" remain with the Boston Celtics for the 1995-96 season, and the Heat "are expected to" name Bob Huggins as head coach. *Wilkins played the '95-96 season in Greece. Pat Riley became Miami's head coach. 📺NBC

June 3, 1984: CBS reports that Jack Nicholson flew from Boston to Los Angeles on the same commercial flight as the Boston Celtics after Game 2 of the NBA Finals. The in-flight movie was Terms of Endearment, starring Nicholson—seen here, courtside, smoking a cigarette at 0:14:

July 11, 2000: Tim Duncan announces that he will re-sign with the San Antonio Spurs—passing on a 6-year, $67.5 million contract that was reportedly offered by the Orlando Magic. 📺 WZZM

June 7, 1990: Pat O'Brien of CBS reports that the Boston Celtics had offered Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski $2.5 million for 5 years "to take over the team," then later reports (via the Charlotte Observer) that Coach K ultimately decided to stay at Duke University.

According to a deleted scene from the 1993 film "Groundhog Day," the only NBA slate available to Phil Connors (Bill Murray)—repeating daily for an unspecified number of months—included: Lakers vs. Sonics, Bulls vs. Pistons, Jazz vs. 76ers, Bucks vs. Celtics, and Spurs vs. Mavs.

30 years ago today: Chicago Bulls fan Don Calhoun throws in a 75-foot shot that wins him $1,000,000. According to Sports Illustrated, he was selected to shoot because a Bulls employee felt his “suede hiking boots wouldn’t scuff the court.” 📺 SportsChannel/ESPN April 14, 1993.

December 14, 1991: Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz elbows Detroit's Isiah Thomas in the head, causing a wound that needed more than 40 stitches to close. Malone was ejected, fined $10,000 and suspended for one game. The Pistons' Darrell Walker was also ejected during the aftermath.

April 22, 1975: Fans litter the Hofheinz Pavilion floor with debris—including glass beer bottles, golf balls, ice cubes, programs and shoes—during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals in Houston. Dave Cowens had 31 PTS/24 REB in the Celtics' 122-117 win over the Rockets.

December 1, 2000: Charles Oakley of the Toronto Raptors is fined $15,000 and suspended for three games for punching Jeff McInnis of the Los Angeles Clippers during a morning shootaround at the Air Canada Centre. *Punch not seen here, just part of the "aftermath." 📺 KPTV

July 27, 1992: The U.S. men's Olympic basketball team beats Croatia, 103-70. Michael Jordan finished with 21 PTS/8 STL, Charles Barkley scored 20 PTS and Scottie Pippen had 13 PTS/9 AST for the "Dream Team." Dražen Petrović scored 19 PTS and Dino Radja added 14 PTS for Croatia.
