Two young men have been sentenced for launching a cyber attack on Transport for London (TfL) which cost tens of millions of pounds in losses and inconvenienced thousands of customers. Thalha Jubair and Owen Flowers were identified by the NCA and City of London Police following the attack on TfL’s network in 2024. They both pleaded guilty to the attack last month in what was only the second criminal prosecution of its kind in the UK under the Computer Misuse Act (CMA). Jubair and Flowers were both leading members of the online criminal collective known as Scattered Spider. Today both were each sentenced to five years and six months imprisonment. This morning, NCA officers worked alongside partners such as the British Armed Forces to board and seize the SMYRTOS — a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker intercepted in the English Channel. A 38-year-old Indian national man has now been arrested by NCA officers on suspicion of suspected sanctions offences under the Russia Regulations. He has been taken into custody, where he will be interviewed by NCA investigators. Our investigation continues.

NCA officers have arrested three people as part of a coordinated operation with French police against a people smuggling organised crime group. The group were involved in transporting Vietnamese migrants to the UK in lorries and small boats. NCA officers apprehended a 25-year-old woman at an address in Wrexham and a 25-year-old man in Newcastle-upon-Tyne this morning. French Police arrested a further 16 people in and around Paris in simultaneous raids, supported by colleagues from Europol, Eurojust and Belgian federal police. The woman arrested today is suspected of assisting that group by laundering money, while the man is believed to have organised facilitation through lower members of the crime group. These arrests are a great example of partnership working with our colleagues in France to tackle the groups behind dangerous crossings to the UK. Tackling people smuggling remains a top priority for the NCA, and this is one of approximately 100 ongoing investigations targeting groups or individuals both directly involved in organising journeys, or those who facilitate that criminality.
