Quite an interesting speech from Matthew Syed at the Tory conference. He called out cousin marriage, and Sharia courts. Though the latter from the left wing framing of ‘sexism’ and ‘reverse discrimination’. Shouldn’t need all that to say we obviously don’t want Sharia courts.

1) It is a satirical tweet about the general culture. You don’t have to take it any more seriously than you would the protagonist of Falling Down, or Larry David in Curb. And arguably the author’s own misanthropy condemns him too. 2) The word has been used frequently in comedy (which is what I did for eleven years, and our current GB show is also comedic) and was on a Netflix special about five minutes ago (see attached). So what is gained by this constantly updating language policing? Who is it helping? We know there is a cost to it, which is people being cancelled, self-censoring, and living in a climate of fear. But what is the benefit? 3) I have never once attacked you since we had a nice conversation and I decided you were reasonable. Yet here you are trying to damage me, perhaps attempting to get me fired so I can’t eat or pay the rent? And this makes you a good person because you stay within the notoriously protean linguistic Overton window? You get a dopamine hit of unearned moral superiority, and score a point off a perceived enemy, but I’m struggling to see why this makes you virtuous and me evil.
