Who, beyond the well-known and much-profiled Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Zohran Mamdani, and Jon Ossoff, are the young people most likely to rebuild the Democratic Party? The bright lights of the next generation don’t fit into easy classifications. They include a seminarian, a waitress, an oysterman, and a semiconductor heiress. There are Bernie-endorsed socialists and iconoclastic centrists. Some are eyeing a national stage, others are staying adamantly local. Some already have a decade of experience; others are fresh upstarts proving themselves. We spent months talking with professionals who recruit and support young candidates to identify the party’s next generation, and we called dozens of political operatives, consultants, and strategists—and granted them all anonymity so they could dish about the nominees candidly. The nominators didn’t all agree, and, of course, had their own perspectives and agendas, but through those conversations, we found the 25 most promising rising Democratic leaders who have yet to become household names. Armed with our list of politicians under 40, photographer Elinor Kry hit the road in a minivan to meet and photograph a dozen or so of the next generation of Democrats. Kry shot her portfolio over a month, hauling a tufted armchair onto boats, truck beds, football fields, construction sites, and suburban cul-de-sacs to capture these officials and candidates on their home turf. Not all of these hopefuls will win their elections this month or next year, but all are worth watching. Although they don’t run the country yet, the visions of these young politicians speak to the problems the party is grappling with: how to deliver on working-class issues, expand the party’s tent while holding onto its values, and stand up to the current administration:

Recent years have seen major advances in aerial technology, from the creation of autonomous flying taxis to the launch of helium zeppelins the length of a football field. Though little has made its way here, many companies developing these sci-fi-seeming technologies see New York as an essential proving ground. Earlier this year, California–based Joby Aviation ran a series of demonstration flights between Manhattan and JFK Airport for its battery-powered air taxis. Skyports Infrastructure is upgrading the Downtown Skyport to accommodate electric aircraft. And while it’s likely years off, Google parent Alphabet is already looking to bring its Wing consumer-delivery service to the five boroughs. “Say it’s Taco Tuesday night, and you’ve forgotten the ground beef. We’re going to be the fastest way to get you that ground beef, so that you can continue preparing dinner for your kids,” says Heather Rivera, Wing’s chief business officer, who lives in New York. The technology is here, these companies say. It’s just a matter of figuring out how to make it work. “We have the most complicated transportation system, with the most stakeholders, and many different layers of regulation — federal, state, and local,” says Kathryn Garcia, executive director of the Port Authority. “But — and this is to quote a classic line — ‘if any of these folks can make it here, they can make it anywhere.’” Anne Kadet investigates the drone delivery, flying car, and autonomous plane companies looking to fly through NYC’s skies:

This morning, TVs throughout the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development headquarters in Washington, D.C., showed an AI-generated video of Trump sucking on the DOGE leader’s toes, with the message, “LONG LIVE THE REAL KING.” The video wasn’t up for long. Journalist Marisa Kabas reports that building staffers couldn’t figure out how to stop the disgusting HUD broadcast, so they just unplugged all the TVs in the building. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the hack, but presumably, the HUD building is chock-full of furious employees right now.

There is also the men’s hockey team, every member of which seemed very happy to party with FBI Director Kash Patel and get a phone call from President Donald Trump after its gold medal-winning game on Sunday. After defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime, Team USA went back to the locker room to drink beer and yell about its victory. Joining it, for some reason, was Patel. It would be one thing if Patel — who has beaten some stiff competition to become the lamest member of the Trump administration — invited himself in. However, after getting roasted for looking dorky in the locker room video, Patel clarified on X that he was “invited” to the celebration by his “friends” on Team USA. Not since the co-creator of the Minions disavowed their history have we had a despicable scandal like this. The Spanish figure skater Tomàs-Llorenç Guarino Sabaté, who’s set to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics, will now be allowed to perform his Minion short-form routine after an initial copyright denial. Guarino Sabaté had been using the song for the entirety of the international skating season — music of which he said was chosen to “bring joy and a playful style to the ice while still meeting every required element to show that skating as a male Olympic figure skater can be fun.” In his celebratory update, the six-time Spanish national champion credited those who “reposted, shared, and supported” his routine for moving the needle on Universal’s reversal, although he’s still waiting on two other musical elements to be cleared.
