A few days ago, our unit lost one of our reconnaissance drone operators. He was a Chinese brother-in-arms.He had traveled halfway around the world toUkraine because he believed in something—to stand against the Russian invasion. We had lived together in the same safe house. We ate together, trained together, and worked out together. He was a talkative guy. He loved to chat, and he definitely enjoyed looking at beautiful women.We had been apart for only a few weeks when I suddenly received the news that he was gone.I still can't quite accept it. He was the first foreigner our unit had lost. Just a few days earlier, he was still full of energy, still joking around, still going on about this and that like he always did. And then, suddenly, he was gone. It's hard to put into words. When his body was recovered, we learned that he and the others had been tortured. Even under torture, they refused to give up any information about our unit. The enemy then beheaded him in an act of revenge. When the commander of Ukraine's Northern Military District learned what had happened, he came to us immediately to offer his condolences. He told all of the Chinese soldiers that he could not accept seeing foreigners lose their lives here. He told us: “This is Ukraine's war. Every one of you has a future ahead of you. You don't have to die here for a war that isn't your own. If any of you want to leave, I completely understand. I will help you get out safely. Even if you've already signed a contract, you can still leave.” For us, it was a devastating loss—not only because we had lost a brother, Also killed alongside him was the best reconnaissance drone operator from our Second Company. None of us chose to leave. Instead, we made our decision. We would stay and fight for our fallen comrade. We will remain here until there are no Russian invaders left on Ukrainian soil. Maybe one day, I—or one of my other comrades—will also remain here forever. But don't grieve for me, my friend. This is the path we chose. And we knew what it could cost. For a better world. Justice will prevail.
