About a decade ago, crashes involving 18-wheelers began to spike on a 14-mile stretch of Interstate 10 in New Orleans. When insurance adjusters examined the roadway where the crashes were happening, there were no obvious hazards. Stranger still, the cars in the crashes were almost always full of passengers. The likelihood of all this happening in one contained geographic area was one in 750 trillion. In this week’s issue, Patrick Radden Keefe reports on a vast insurance fraud in New Orleans. In October of 2025, during the Trump Administration’s immigration crackdown in Chicago, dubbed Operation Midway Blitz, a young Latino man is chased and seized by masked Border Patrol agents, most of whom are young Latino men themselves. Neighbors emerge from their homes and pepper the agents with questions, then with invectives, and tensions quickly escalate. Bill Morrison’s short documentary “Sawyer Avenue, Sunday Afternoon” offers an inside view of this arrest, using videos shared by witnesses in the neighborhood as well as footage from the body cameras worn by the agents. In February, Ava Kofman reported on a wealthy Los Angeles couple who obtained dozens of children through surrogates. Guojun Xuan and Silvia Zhang kept their children in a $3.2-million mansion in Arcadia; videos filmed inside the house showed children being spanked, forced to squat, and hit in the face. After police reviewed the home’s surveillance footage, they grew alarmed. On May 9th, Silvia and Guojun were arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, and their children were taken into foster care. The couple was released three days later, but the children have remained in state custody ever since. Read Kofman’s update on the case:
