Why is Washington imposing VISA restrictions on South African key policy makers? South Africa’s crime in Washington’s eyes is increasingly its refusal to operate inside America’s geopolitical script. South Africa sits in BRICS, maintains strategic ties with China and Russia, engages Iran, challenges Israel at the ICJ and pushes for a more multipolar global order. That matters because BRICS now represents a huge share of global GDP, population and trade. South Africa is not powerful enough to threaten the US militarily, but it is influential enough to help build an international system where Washington has less ability to dictate the terms. That is the real source of the tension.

🇿🇦NATIONAL SUICIDE! For 30 years, South Africans have demanded secure borders, enforcement of immigration laws and the deportation of those with no legal right to remain. Instead, this government has normalised lawlessness and expects citizens to live with the consequences. Communities are left to deal with illegal mining, organised crime, drugs, illegal firearms and recurring concerns over food safety, while the state lurches from one excuse to the next. But when South Africans march and demand action, suddenly there are enough police, soldiers and private security to contain the people instead of the problem. South African Government greatest failure isn’t just incompetence, it’s that it has become more effective at managing public anger than protecting its own citizens.
