As a kid, I assumed Lew Lehr must be some incredibly famous guy that all adults knew because of how often he was spoofed in cartoons. Turns out, he was a newsreel host in the 1930s that is mainly remembered today through cartoon parodies.

The 1934 Ub Iwerks cartoon HELL'S FIRE shows the residents of Hell to be Napoleon, Nero, Rasputin, Cleopatra, Simon Legree (the villain from Uncle Tom's Cabin), Bluebeard, Dr. Jekyll, and Mr. Dry (the symbol for Prohibition).

Yeah, and they're brilliant. Also, no one was "lied to." It was openly acknowledged that these were made for the war effort and that info has never been hidden. Why should it be?

Five years of being cancer-free! The cancer was in my tongue, so I made this tongue-related cartoon around that time to spin something funny out of the situation.

R.I.P. Arleen Sorkin, the original voice of Harley Quinn. The way Sorkin was able to combine twisted loopiness with a hint of sympathetic sadness is key to what made the character work so well.

Similarly, I always thought the song "Angel in Disguise" was one of the all-time classic standards because it was played/sung so often in the old Looney Tunes. But not really! It's from the fairly obscure 1940 WB film IT ALL CAME TRUE, and has only been covered a few times.

Old news, but new to me: I've always liked the Norah Jones song "Sinkin' Soon," but I've never seen the music video (directed by Ace Norton), which is exactly my kind of thing, full of bizarre puppets and eccentric stop-motion. Plus Norah in a cartoon mouse outfit.

In honor of Jane Russell's birthday, he's one of the all-time great movie bloopers that got left in the movie itself. Jane getting knocked into the pool in GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (1953) was an accident, but it was so funny it was left in.

Nobody knew how to cram in the sight gags like Tex Avery.

This is garbage. Draw your political mudslinging by hand or I'm not interested. Clip from Chuck Jones' gorgeously designed pro-FDR short HELL-BENT FOR ELECTION (1944).

An interesting short that doesn't get talked about that much: Ub Iwerks' SKELETON FROLIC (1937), a color twist on his SKELETON DANCE animation for Disney back in 1929. It's not as classic as the original, but the colors and animation are quite nice and it's good spooky fun.

Walt Disney ran the creative side of the studio, not the business side. He would sink tons of money into whatever crazy idea he was currently obsessed with and hope it would all turn out.

In addition to being hilarious, I always marvel at the incredible artistry the animators packed into every frame of the old Looney Tunes shorts. All of the little character nuances, the gorgeous backgrounds, the musical accents… these things really are such treasures of cinema.
