Agbara Nla, also known as "Ayamatanga" , was a powerful Gospel drama released in 1992 by Mount Zion Films Ministry. The movie became extremely popular and scared many of us as children. It also brought Mount Zion Films into the limelight.Originally released in Yoruba, its massive success led to a full English version in 1994 titled "The Ultimate Power". Instead of dubbing or subtitling the original, Evangelist Mike Bamiloye and the team completely reshot the entire film from scratch to reach a wider audience across Nigeria and beyond. Did this movie scare you as a child too?

In 1986, Ivorian reggae legend Alpha Blondy (Seydou Koné) dropped the timeless anthem “Jerusalem” — recorded at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica with The Wailers A soul-stirring plea for unity between Christians, Muslims & Jews, sung in English, French, Arabic & Hebrew after his 1985 visit to Israel. In 1988, a young law student from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, named Bianca Onoh (representing Abuja) was crowned Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria. She didn’t stop there. That same year, she won Miss Africa 1988 in Banjul, Gambia, then made history on March 4, 1989, by becoming the first African to win Miss Intercontinental at the National Arts Theatre in Lagos, hosted by Silverbird Productions. But her reign was as dramatic as it was iconic.Amid intense public scrutiny over her relationship with Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu (which her father, Christian Onoh, initially opposed), Bianca resigned both titles. The MBGN crown went to runner-up Regina Askia, while Miss Intercontinental passed to Brenda Marte of the Dominican Republic. Bianca Onoh didn’t just win pageants she put Nigerian beauty on the global map in the late ‘80s.

Throwback to 2009, right at the peak of the beef between Mallam Spicey and Terry G. Spicey dropped that diss track and everybody was loving it back then, even though he sampled the beat from Terry G’s “Free Madness.” Thinking about it now, it’s actually so funny 😅 How you go release a diss track on your “enemy” and still sample his entire beat plus copy the song style? Such a wild move. But I guess Terry G just decided to overlook it Did you vibe to this back then?

Flashback to the historic moment in 2001 when 18-year-old Agbani Darego from Rivers State became the first African woman to win the Miss World crown. Crowned in Sun City, South Africa, after dazzling judges and beating 93 contestants from around the globe, the Kalabari beauty didn’t just take the title she shattered decades of Eurocentric beauty standards and opened doors for dark-skinned African queens on the global stage. Agbani’s win was iconic in Nigeria and across Black Africa because it was the first time a dark-skinned African queen from sub-Saharan roots took the global crown. How old were you when this happened?

The New Masquerade is one of Nigeria's most iconic and longest-running television sitcoms, dominating Tuesday night airwaves on the NTA network from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. Created by James Iroha as a means of healing and unifying the nation after the devastating Nigerian Civil War, the show used biting satire and hilarious domestic drama to critique societal corruption and government failures. Centered around the pompous, brilliantly witty Chief Zebrudaya famous for his signature broken English and an unforgettable cast of characters like Ovularia, Chief Jegede Shokoya, Giringori, and Clarus, it became a cultural touchstone that successfully united Nigerians across different ethnic and generational lines through the universal language of laughter. Do you remember this show?
