As I watched this video, my heart was filled with both joy and ❤️🩹 at the same time. Look at this little boy. He is standing at the train station, not yet knowing that he is about to hear the words he has been waiting for-that he is going home, to Ukraine. Then look at his eyes the moment he finds out. So much happiness in a single glance. And at the same time, so much pain. Because of Russіа, thousands of Ukrainian children have lost their homes. Thousands have been forced to leave Ukraine. And no matter what anyone says, it is hard. Especially for children. They miss their homes, their bedrooms, their friends, and the places they love. They simply want to go home. Watching the joy in this little boy’s eyes brought me to tears. I’m sitting here crying. While in russia children are dressed in military uniforms, placed on tanks, and taught that wаr is something to be proud of. Look at Ukraine. Look at our songs. Our dances. Our language. Our embroidered shirts. Our laughter. We do not teach children to hаte. We teach them to love life. Ukrainians keep singing even under air raid sirens. We dance even after sleepless nights. We protect our culture even while russia tries to еrase us with mіssiles, оccupation, and feаr. Russia wants Ukrainian songs to fall silent. They want our dances to be forgotten. They want the Ukrainian language to disappear. They want the very word “Ukraine” to no longer exist. But we are fіghting. For the right to live. For the right to be ourselves. My dad has a saying: if we didn’t have varenyky with sour cherries in the summer, then the whole year was wasted. When making varenyky with sour cherries, you first remove the pits from the cherries. Then you place the cherries inside the dough, add about half a teaspoon to a teaspoon of sugar, seal the dumpling, and boil it. By the way, I know that in English both sweet and sour cherries are called “cherries,” with the distinction being “sweet cherry” and “sour cherry.” But in Ukraine, we use different words: вишня is the sour cherry, and черешня is the sweet cherry.

A very difficult video to watch. But the world must see such footage to understand what is truly happening in Ukraine — that Russia is striking civilians, that children are trapped under rubble. In the video, the sixth floor of the building collapsed onto the second floor — along with the fifth, fourth, and third floors. People literally fell down together with the concrete slabs. Everyone is in shock and panic. A child from the third floor fell down with their apartment onto the second floor and was pinned by a slab. I completely forgot to tell you about one more of our warm traditions. After the New Year, early in the morning, we eagerly wait for the posivalnyky. Posivannya is a bright Ukrainian tradition filled with faith and hope for a good year. On the morning of January 1st, boys go from house to house carrying handfuls of grain. As they scatter it inside the home, they offer sincere wishes of health, peace, prosperity, and happiness to the whole family.
