A taxi driver who caused the death of a man on the A23 in Surrey after driving for prolonged periods has been jailed for six years. Footage from Kolawole Erunkulu’s car captured the moment he fell asleep at the wheel in Merstham, shortly before 6.30am on Sunday, 17 August. Erunkulu was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in March 2026 and pleaded guilty at court in June. At Guildford Crown Court, he was sentenced to six years in prison for causing death by dangerous driving. He was also disqualified from driving for eight years, to run concurrently with his prison sentence. Erunkulu’s Audi swerved across the carriageway before colliding with a Volkswagen being driven by Philip Dray, who was parked at the side of the road. Data from Erunkulu’s employers, along with footage from the interior camera of his vehicle, showed that he had driven for around 53 hours during the three days leading up to the fatal collision. The case highlights the devastating consequences of driving while fatigued and the importance of taking adequate breaks when behind the wheel.

Honestly, I’m really getting tired of some of my fellow Nigerians in the diaspora. Over the smallest issues, people are going as far as messaging someone’s workplace or even calling immigration on them. For what exactly? Are we the only immigrants in these countries? It’s exhausting seeing how quick some people are to tear each other down instead of supporting one another. Always looking for someone’s downfall how far does it really need to go? I’m not sure whether there was an arrangement between the event organisers and Enfield Council, but when hosting events in public parks, it’s essential to ensure the area is properly cleaned afterwards. This is a basic responsibility, and organisers should have a dedicated team in place to manage post-event cleanup. If this wasn’t handled appropriately, I believe the organisers should reach out to Enfield Council to apologise and address the situation. Taking accountability would help maintain a good relationship and increase the chances of being allowed to host the event at the same venue again in the future. I was in court today in Nottingham for the sentencing of Adedapo Adegbola. It was a deeply emotional and sobering experience. What stood out throughout the case was how much it centred on control and obsession. The relationship only lasted a few months, but when she ended it, he could not accept it. In anger, he went to H&M, bought knives, went to her home, and brutally took her life. Listening to Stephanie’s mum read her victim impact statement was heartbreaking. The courtroom fell silent. He cried as she spoke, but nothing can bring her back or ease the pain her family now lives with every day. Today, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 25 years to serve before he is deported back to Nigeria. This case is a painful reminder of how dangerous controlling and obsessive behaviour can become if ignored. No one should lose their life for choosing to walk away from a relationship.
