Crowds slapping their chests in rhythm, shouting the names of the dead of Karbala, weeping on command, some striking themselves until the body becomes part of the show. In these processions that is the point: latm — beating the chest — lament, tears, voices breaking in the street. Faith, for some. Theater of power, when it is staged in someone else’s capital. Under Assad, Damascus became that stage. Militias and families brought in from Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Rituals in the heart of the city. Homes taken. “Cultural centers” planted like flags. They were not only mourning Hussein. They were occupying. Then Ahmad al-Sharaa’s offensive came. The people who filled the streets as long as a regime stood behind them vanished. Bags packed, corridor to the border: the project collapsed, and they ran like rats when the lights went out. That is the degradation: sacred grief used as a siren, a city treated like a set, and a foreign project that could only last while a dictator held the door open. Syria went back to the Syrians. The video is the before. The after is called flight.

They chant Death to America. Then they admit they helped America take two countries. Rouhani at the UN: we aided democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan. Iranian officials on camera: we were the country that cooperated the most. Taliban was our enemy. Repeat Afghanistan in Iraq. We helped topple Saddam. We helped topple the Taliban. Without the IRGC, the Americans would have hit a wall in Afghanistan. Shared interest. Shared work. Then they put the Shia in power in Baghdad. Same state that sells “resistance” to the street. Because Jewish people keep committing acts of horror against nations.
