When we talk about a ship, we still picture a crew on the deck, someone at the helm. Now imagine a vessel, that can leave the shore, navigate, and carry out a mission with no one aboard. Today, that is a reality. An unmanned surface vessel, or USV, operates on the water with no one aboard: remotely controlled, autonomous, or somewhere in between. Removing the crew changes what becomes possible: operating in dangerous environments, extending mission time, and taking on tasks where putting people at risk makes little sense.
