“The Hindu Nationalist project and Israel’s project have plenty in common.” In this episode of Palestine Deep Dive, British journalist and media critic Karishma Patel argues that, despite India’s history as a former colony, shared ideas around nationalism, ethno-identity and religion help explain the growing ties between India and Israel. Gaza was once known as the “Athens of Asia”, a celebrated centre of learning in the Byzantine world. In this deep dive, historian William Dalrymple explains how Gaza developed a renowned school of rhetoric and became a destination for the education of Byzantine elites, much like Oxford or Cambridge today. He highlights how Gaza’s intellectual legacy extended beyond rhetoric and philosophy, including influential biblical scholarship that travelled as far as seventh-century Canterbury. That centuries-old tradition of valuing education has remained a defining feature of Gaza’s society. Despite the immense challenges of decades under Israeli occupation and siege, modern Gaza has maintained one of the highest literacy rates in the region, with adult literacy at around 98%. Across Palestine, education continues to hold a central place in the lives and aspirations of Palestinians. William Dalrymple | Ahmed Alnaouq

Speaking to Palestine Deep Dive’s Karishma Patel, former CNN journalist Ana Maria Monjardino describes the pressure involved in booking Palestinian voices onto mainstream news programmes, saying Palestinian guests were scrutinised in ways Israeli and Zionist guests were not. “You're caught in this kind of problematic situation where you want to increase representation of Palestinian voices, but you're also responsible for someone, and you want to make sure that they're treated properly.” In this episode of The Walkout, Monjardino also recalls Palestinians being hesitant to appear on CNN, questioning whether it was worth sharing their stories on platforms they felt were “ultimately contributing to the destruction of their communities.” Ana Maria Monjardino | Karishma

Palestine Deep Dive's Ahmed Alnaouq, who has lost 21 members of his family in Gaza since October 2023, reacts to attempts by Israeli media outlets to discredit NAZA filmmaker Yuval Abraham by drawing a connection between the two, while accusing Alnaouq of being linked to Hamas. “Some people are going to get sued” over the false and defamatory remarks, Alnaouq says. He also argues that his own family's story makes the case for the film, rather than discrediting it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed a government response that would seek to impose legal and financial consequences on the NAZA filmmakers, including measures to revoke their citizenship.
