Over the last 9 months the debate in our nation about Australia’s migration program has become louder and louder. On one level, I totally understand people’s concern about migration numbers. But it’s important when we discuss migration, it’s important some facts are considered so as to ensure we don’t inadvertently hurt our country rather than help it. Last week I gave the annual dinner speech at The Sydney Institute, with the aim of putting a few facts on the table. And providing a perspective of the value and importance of a well calibrated migration program. I know this will not be politically popular in many quarters, and not everyone will agree with my position. I respect that. But nonetheless, people are entitled to hear my position and can judge accordingly. It’s a long speech, so this is just a snippet, but the full speech is in the comments. I have just held an emergency press conference following Optus’s late afternoon announcement regarding a 000 outage and the tragic death of two South Australians. The South Australian Government was only made aware of these deaths after Optus’s media conference had already begun. This is completely unacceptable. South Australians expect and deserve to know that when they call 000, help will be there. A failure of this scale is serious, and the consequences have been devastating. The State Government will be undertaking a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the outage, the adequacy of the response, and most importantly, the circumstances that led to the tragic deaths of two members of our community. 📸 7NEWS Adelaide
