The Ukranian government is repulsive. This video is a documentary that exposes part of their corruption. The overthrow of democratically elected President Viktor Yanukovych, in 2014, happened after U.S. intervention. The U.S. and Europe didn't like that the new leader was proRussia and refused to join the European Union. Ukraine was part of Russia until the 90s. Russian is a native language in Ukraine. Following the uprising and overthrow, there was the Odessa Massacre where 48 people died when the political factions crashed. The side that had their leader overthrown (profederalist) was trapped inside a building, which the opposing side (prounity) set on fire. A young boy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time ended up killed as well and people who attempted to escape the fire were beaten to death. No one was brought to justice. Courts found the investigations were biased and only the profederalists, whose members were burned and beaten to death, were investigated. As of 2021, no one had been held responsible for the 48 murders. The United Nations: Ukraine website confirms this. This video is a 2016 documentary by a French journalist, Anne-Laure Bonnel, who followed Russian speaking Ukrainian citizens on the ground during the war in Donbas. It is available on YouTube and it is listed on IMDB. Bonnel stated in an interview that "The Russian-speaking Ukrainian population has been bombarded by their own government". She was inspired to go to Ukraine after hearing a volatile speech by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenk (2014-2019), who took over after the democratically elected President, Viktor Yanukovych, was overthrown with support from the U.S. and Europe. President Poroshenk said Russian speaking Ukrainian citizens wouldn't have work or pensions and would be in cellars. A recent law, which was signed by Poroshenk in 2019 and further enacted in 2021 under Zelenskyy, forces "obligatory use of Ukrainian by state officials and civil servants" and further restricts the Russian language. Approximately 1/3 or 30% of Ukraine citizens speak Russian as their first language. What will happen to people who have worked in those fields for years and do not speak fluent Ukrainian? The uprising that overthrew the elected leader of Ukraine in 2014, which the U.S. and Europe had an obvious hand in, the restrictions on Russian, which is a native language of Ukraine, and the inability to openly criticize the government are marks of an authoritarian dictatorship, not a democracy. Zelenskyy has been accused by multiple entities of attempting to illegally eliminate his main political rival and media outlets with opposing viewpoints. Extreme censorship and a lack of legal ramifications for the prounity movement after the 2014 Odessa Massacre are characteristics of authoritarianism. Per the CATO institute, "Ukrainian officials harassed political dissidents, adopted censorship measures, and barred foreign journalists they regarded as critics of the government and its policies". I hate that politicians in the United States have propped up Ukraine as a symbol of Democracy and pretended this war is one sided. Ukraine is no better than Russia. Zelenskyy is no better than Putin. Ukraine allowed an American journalist to die in prison because he voiced criticism against Zelenskyy and believed Russia had valid reasons for invading Ukraine. Ukrainian leaders vilified 30% of their own population and are authoritarian scum. I highly recommend watching Donbas, the 2016 documentary by Anne-Laure Bonnel, included in this post.
