कश्मीर की सड़कों पर हिजाब पहनी बच्चियों के सामने "हर हर महादेव" के नारे लगाने से ज़्यादा वाहियात और क्या हरक़त हो सकती है? अमरनाथ यात्रा करना हमारा धार्मिक अधिकार है। लेकिन जिस धरती पर हम यात्रा करने जाते हैं, वहाँ के लोगों की भावनाओं और स्थानीय संवेदनशीलता का सम्मान करना भी उतना ही बड़ा धर्म है। यही महादेव का मार्ग है। सच तो यह है कि हम दिन-रात धर्म की बात करते हैं, लेकिन धर्म के सिद्धांत सबसे पहले भूल जाते हैं। शायद इसी को कलियुग कहते हैं।

"Hope" is the thing with feathers. What unfolded in the National Capital was not merely police excess. It was the banality of evil. Men in uniform: ordinary men, devoid of reflection, carrying out acts of staggering cruelty under the guise of obeying orders. But there are young people such as these who are willing to risk the comfort of a "government job" or the security of a "stable life" because they know that blind obedience is not always virtue. They are the beacons of light India desperately needs. We can hope that when history places ordinary people at moral crossroads, they choose to think before they choose to obey, because thinking is often the last barrier between authority and authoritarianism.

My senior colleague Dr Shashi Tharoor's admiration for PM Modi appears to have transcended the limitations of the physical world. He now seems capable of hearing what Modi doesn't even say. According to the official MEA readout of the Modi–Trump meeting on the sidelines of the G7: 1. There is no mention of the cold-blooded killing of three Indian sailors by the United States in the Gulf of Oman. 2. This was the first Modi-Trump meeting after Operation Sindoor, yet there is no indication that Modi challenged Trump's repeated claim - now made over 120 times - that he secured a ceasefire by threatening India with trade consequences. 3. There is no mention of the attack on Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, India's guest during MILAN-2026, in what is effectively India's strategic backyard. And yet, Tharoor ji somehow heard forceful assertions, robust pushback, and uncompromising diplomacy that never made it into the official record. Perhaps the rest of us are constrained by ordinary human senses. For devotees of the 'Maha-Maanav Modi', the less he says, the more they hear.

The use of state violence against the media is intolerable. At the same time, those protesting must also remember that passion should never come at the cost of judgment. Intimidating or assaulting journalists is never justified. You may disagree with a journalist's reporting, but challenge it with your ideas, your experiences, and your activism — not with violence. We stand on the side of humanity and justice. Violence is not our way.

Nadda ji came to cover for Dharmendra Pradhan and accused us of “politicising” the issue. What a joke. The issue is political because the BJP has made it political. They lathi-charge our youth, fire pellets, use shock batons and tear the clothes of our daughters - in the National Capital - and then expect us to stay silent. We will not. The NTA should have been a statutory body. Instead, it was registered under the Societies Act - allowing it to escape proper audit and enabling contracts to be handed out to RSS-affiliated people. This is not an innocent mishap. It is a scam against the youth of India. Dharmendra Pradhan will not be allowed to hide behind Nadda ji, or anyone else. There is no replacement for accountability.

As heartening as this day was, as I took my oath as a Member of the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, it was impossible to ignore the government's violent crackdown on young people. The lathi-charge, the tear gas, the electric shocks, and the utter contempt with which peaceful protesters were treated on the streets leading to Parliament were deeply agonising. Politics should compel us to uphold justice. That is what Parliament - the highest institution of our democracy - must constantly remind us. But if this is how the government chooses to begin this session of Parliament, it sends a chilling message: that the government would rather unleash violence than accept responsibility, and would rather sacrifice the lives and futures of countless young people than remove an incompetent minister. Dharmendra Pradhan must resign.

From the United Nations to the United States, the discriminatory conduct of the Indian government and its compliant institutions is bringing disrepute to our democracy.
