‘THIS IS NOT A CRIMINAL TRIAL’ Atty. Chel Diokno of the prosecution panel explains that the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is not a criminal trial. “I think it is very clear that this is not a criminal trial. This is an impeachment trial where the outcome will determine whether the Vice President can continue to serve as vice president. And whether there would be any perpetual disqualification imposed on her,” he said during the 23rd day of the impeachment.

'I DON'T THINK WE'RE GOING TO PRESENT LACHICA' Prosecution counsel Lorna Kapunan reaffirmed on Wednesday that the panel will not summon Col. Raymund Dante Lachica before the Senate impeachment court, explaining that his testimony would be redundant following the testimony of former Office of the Vice President (OVP) disbursing officer Gina Acosta. Meanwhile, Lachica expressed his readiness to face the court after his name was repeatedly mentioned in the testimony of Acosta. NOT FROM MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA Contrary to Senator Alan Peter Cayetano's claim, it was not members of the media who applauded and cheered for him during his press conference at the Senate on Thursday, but rather his own staff and several guests in attendance. "First time akong napalakpakan ng media, walang bayad 'yon," he said after claiming that he had managed to unite various political groups, which he alleged are now aligned with the administration. Cayetano also maintained that he remains Senate president, despite the recognition by Malacañang and the House of Representatives of Senator Win Gatchalian’s leadership as acting Senate president. | via Malou Escudero/Pilipino Star Ngayon

‘THE FILIPINO PEOPLE DESERVE A GOVERNMENT FOCUSED ON SOLVING PROBLEMS’ Vice President Sara Duterte said the government has become “more preoccupied with protecting power than serving the people,” citing alleged attempts to silence critics. “A government that fears dissent is not demonstrating strength. It is revealing insecurity. And that insecurity is reflected in the direction our country is taking today,” Duterte remarked in a video statement Tuesday. Duterte cited the flood control controversy, her impeachment trial, and the charter change, saying those issues revealed “disturbing realities.” “The current state of our nation reveals three disturbing realities: first, the effort to divert attention from legitimate questions surrounding the flood control controversy; second, the willingness to disregard constitutional safeguards in pursuit of a politically motivated impeachment; and third, the relentless pursuit of greater political power under the guise of Charter Change,” she claimed. Duterte formally responded to impeachment articles on Monday, as the Senate is set to begin the trial on July 6, 2026.
