Pete Hegseth claims promotions should be based on merit. Great. Then he shouldn't object to explaining why qualified women and people of color are being passed over for promotion. I spoke in support of Rep. Lois Frankel's amendment requiring Hegseth to justify these decisions. Transparency is the bare minimum when careers and military readiness are on the line.

Last fall, the Trump administration issued an Orwellian directive called NSPM-7 which would allow them to investigate anyone they deem to be "anti-Christian," "anti-capitalist," or "anti-American," for domestic terrorism. Those are vague and undefined terms, and this directive is a clear effort to silence criticism and dissent by infringing on Americans' freedom of speech. Today, I offered an amendment to the Commerce, Justice, & Science funding bill to prohibit the Trump administration from targeting any person or organization solely for exercising their constitutionally-protected First Amendment rights. Every Republican in Committee voted no.

I asked my Republican colleagues to explain why they want to ban the IRS from providing an online tool that ALREADY EXISTS to allow people to file their taxes for free. *Silence* Every Republican voted against Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez's amendment to allow the IRS to offer Direct File. The truth is there is no good reason (other than the fact that Intuit and H&R Block spent more than $85 million on lobbying in the last 10 years.)
