A reminder: our federal government is shut down because the Senate minority chose to use this “gridlock” as a political stage to demand $1.5T in new spending. Specifically, they want taxpayer-funded healthcare for those in this country illegally, to reverse the border security provisions set under the OBBBA, and to do away with the $50B allotment for rural hospitals. This counterproposal is a partisan non-starter and my colleagues on the other side of the aisle know it. In the meantime, every day our government is shut down it is costing the U.S. money, resources, and productivity.

When I served in the Idaho Legislature, one thing was always abundantly clear—legislation and debate must always be limited to a single subject. It goes without saying, but in D.C., that is not how things are run, and I believe that needs to change. I have reintroduced the One Subject at a Time Act, H.R. 4324, which will focus every bill the U.S. Congress considers on a single subject, ensuring each topic receives a separate vote.
