The RTÉ Director General, Kevin Bakhurst, gave me a commitment last week to look at how RTÉ can ensure that it gets a range of views on air. I'm calling for RTÉ to have an independent audit of its own editorial policy - to serve its diverse public and avoid privileging certain viewpoints. A radical new definition of GENDER, never previously considered, is being given protected characteristic status...a final clip from this week's Seanad debate. Speak out now on this Bill if you don't want to be a future victim of cancel-culture silencing. County councillors, TDs and senators of all parties need to know that this Bill is a political red line.

In the Seanad today, I welcomed the failure of the Social Democrats to remove the three-day waiting period for abortion. Thousands of women have taken advantage of this waiting period to rethink and as a result went ahead with their pregnancy. Surely this is a cause for celebration, not the opposite. It seems to be a strategy on the extreme Left of politics to keep pushing for wider access to abortion, if only to prevent any discussion of the tragedy taking place in our midst– a major increase in the number of abortions taking place each year, no government strategy to reduce abortion or promote positive alternatives, and cruel practices in late-term abortion situations. People with different views on whether or when abortion should be legal should surely acknowledge that each abortion is a tragedy and we should work to reduce the numbers taking place.

A shameful guillotining of consideration and debate of amendments to the ‘Hate Crimes’ legislation took place last Wednesday night in the Seanad. The Bill goes back to the Dáil now. So we had no Report Stage for the Minister to explain her thinking; no explanation for the new, dangerous definition of ‘gender’ other than that it is inclusive; even a claim by the Minister not to understand my position on the issue. Let’s spell it out one more time. The Bill comes up with a new definition of ‘gender’ that conflates the issues of ‘gender’, as always understood, and ‘gender identity’. The timelessly understood idea of the gender binary, i.e. male and female, is displaced by a new, fluid and unscientific gender spectrum notion. This conflation is totally unnecessary for the protection of any individual or class of person. The Bill could simply have listed both ‘gender’ and ‘gender identity or expression’ as separate protected characteristics, (as was done for example in the 2017 Victims of Crime Act). But the Minister would not do this. No adequate reason was ever offered for the new definition other than that it was 'futureproofing' (Simon Harris) and ‘inclusive’ (Helen McEntee). The new definition will have an immediate contagion effect across all criminal legislation aligned or altered by the ‘Hate Crimes’ Bill. The same politicians who foisted this on us will (if returned at the election) continue to seek to harness all laws built around the ordinary meaning of ‘gender’ (as in male or female) and apply these instead to an indefinite range of gender identities. The new definition will give new cover to those promoting gender ideology to young people—especially in new school curricula. It will give ideological support to the invasion by certain men of womens’ spaces and sports. It will provide cover for dangerous HSE approaches to gender dysphoria. It will be used to shore up the unpopular Athena Swan charters imposed by the HEA on third level academics. It will lead to a dismantling of the Equality Acts. Men can be women, and you simply have to suck it up. This Government sought to erase women and the concept of ‘mother’ from the Constitution earlier this year as part of the same fringe ideology. The People, by a large majority, stopped them. The Government refused to learn and doubled down on its woke policy. Your TDs could actually block this Bill in the coming days—if they were willing to defh the party whip. So please let them know what you think. I told the Minister on Wednesday that she will not deserve the votes of any parents of schoolgoing children if she maintains this corrupt definition of ‘gender’ in this legislation. Politicians who will not stand up for sex/gender really do not deserve to be returned. They are enablers of harmful practices. The voters will have an opportunity to choose new representatives soon for the next Dail. They should punish irresponsible TDs and choose more wisely next time. Look for good quality Independents and sympathetic small parties, and Members of the larger parties only if they vocally and clearly defy their political masters. We urgently need change.

We are back on the evidence trail (4), and again we are outside the Department of Justice. An unfurled flag provides a clue to the GENDER influences at play in the drafting of this unwanted ‘Hate Speech Bill’. That the Bill has gone on holiday is no reason for you to forget it.

For parents who have concerns about gender ideology infusing the primary school curriculum: I received no reassuring answers from either the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) nor from the Department of Education when their representatives came before the Oireachtas Education Committee yesterday. If you are concerned about the permeation of the primary school curriculum by negative gender ideology, please make your voices heard when the politicians come canvassing over the coming weeks. This is an important election issue.

This week’s appearance by Meta, Tiktok and Google before the Oireachtas Communications Committee proved yet again that Big Tech cannot be trusted to protect children online because Big Tech is in the business of psychological manipulation and keeping people hooked. That’s why it’s pretty shameful that Minister Patrick O’Donovan is not committing to banning access to social media for under-16s, when other countries are realising that children’s welfare requires this.

The Assisted Dying Committee Report was launched today, but as a news moment, it had to give way to the Taoiseach’s surprising announcement of his resignation. This Report is a travesty of the evidence heard by the Committee over the past year. The case for assisted suicide and euthanasia was not established and the Report’s own words do not warrant the recommendations that it makes. If society was merely a collection of individuals then laws founded solely on personal autonomy might make sense. But we are not islands. We are a tangled web of interconnected and vulnerable lives, all of which are worth living. Legislation for assisted dying would endanger the lives and happiness of many people. The Committee Chairperson, Michael Healy-Rae TD, and Robert Troy TD joined me in voting against the Report of the Committee. Together we have published a set of Minority Recommendations. I have also prepared an Explanatory Report on how the Committee got it so wrong. The link to this document is here.

The huge increase in Ireland’s abortion rate (over 10,000 Irish abortions last year) is a tragedy for our country and an indictment of our political class. Leo Varadkar told us in 2018 that abortion would be ‘rare’ under the new law. The Government misled people. Please contact all your politicians to insist on policies to make abortion rare, by promoting and funding positive alternatives.

Today in the Seanad, I criticised the arrogance of the UN CEDAW Committee for demanding a re-run of last year’s spectacularly failed “mothers in the home” / “Care”” referendum. What we need from our government are policies that respect the role of both mothers and fathers in the home and to support parents in their home responsibilities. There is more to life than the market and the workplace.
