Sirène shows the Expeditioners visions of what they most desperately wish they could have back. But with Verso, she can’t show him anything. And I think that’s because there’s nothing left in him that he even wants to reclaim. He’s been worn down so completely, body and soul, that what remains isn’t hope, or regret, or longing for the past. It’s just the desire to die. There isn’t a single line of dialogue in this cutscene. And yet, through the beautiful music, the characters’ expressions, and the silence itself, you can feel every bit of their loss, their yearning, and their pain. The way this scene delivers so much emotion without relying on words is honestly incredible. For me, it’s one of the most devastating and unforgettable scenes in E33.

I can’t stop crying over the fact that Maelle, who can only play the piano in this clumsy, awkward way, has an ability called “Mezzo Forte.” It has to be because she used to listen to Verso play when she was little. Even after Alicia was reborn as Maelle and lost all her memories, I think the beautiful melodies he played on the piano still echoed softly somewhere deep within her heart. The irony of Verso, a genius pianist, having no abilities named after musical terms hits me so hard, especially when his theme consists entirely of a beautiful piano melody. It’s absolutely heartbreaking in the best possible way. To Verso, music may not have been something to wield in battle, but rather something that steadied his heart and helped him remain himself. Perhaps that is why it was so precious to him: music was a fundamental part of who he was, something he cherished throughout his life. When you play as Maelle and interact with the piano, she plays it clumsily, but when Verso does the same, his performance is fluid and mesmerizing. I love details like this so much. The dev team is incredibly good at trusting players to notice the hidden truths and meanings for themselves, without ever spelling them out.
