Bismillah. Touchdown in Sarajevo (“Jerusalem of Europe”) for another halal travel guide adventure in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These lands give me hope in Allah’s promise. Aldin Kadic was asked once as we were coming down Prenj mountain: “People have made repeated attempts to erase you Muslims from here for over hundreds of years, committing ethnic cleansing, genocide, and all sorts of atrocities in the process. The international community has always been complicit and it cannot be said the Ummah did its part. I do not mean to be rude, but why are you still Muslim?” Aldin’s face was stoic. He did not flinch at the question or even appear pensive in the way one might be when wrestling with an existential question. He simply pointed to the mountain range behind us and replied: “Once upon a time, you could hear the threats and taunts of soldiers who wanted to kill us. As you can see, they are not there today. The reason we are Muslims is because we have learnt in Bosnia that even if the whole world betrays you, the attempts to erase us all failed because Allah was with us. Allah alone was enough and defeated them all. So, why would we abandon Allah?” May Allah always protect these blessed lands. May its resilience always serve as an example. May its faith always inspire. May it always be home to the message of God and his prophets Jesus, Moses and Muhammad that there is no God but One, and that He is always sufficient for the goodness of humanity to triumph over evil, no matter how overwhelming that evil might appear.
