Atomic Habitz tearing through Funkadelic’s ‘Red Hot Mama’ at Newport Jazz Festival. And, just like that, I have a new favourite band and need to put my socks back on.

Marvin Gaye’s a cappella Sexual Healing, as he harmonises with himself alongside Gordon Banks. Just in case anyone wants to know what perfection sounds like.

Can - Halleluwah Eight colossal minutes of industrial-strength funk. Monotonic, yet ever-changing: a slow-burning rhythmic monster. There's funk, and then there's Can’s version of funk. Beat Club. 1971.

Flea - Honora My album of the day. A veteran bassist in unfamiliar territory, with trumpet in hand, trusting instinct over mastery. On a wander through jazz, dub and ambient, as a crack band leaves him plenty room to find his feet. 2026. 🎧 A Plea

Neil Young, walking through the park one day, is stopped by a fan and asked how he plays Cinnamon Girl. Neil sits down, drops the tuning, shows him how, and strolls off to continue his day. Coolness personified.

Marvin Gaye’s secondary overdubbed vocal on What’s Going On, isolated, for anyone that needs to hear it. Like honey for the ear.

Neil Young - Only Love Can Break Your Heart So much pain in a deceptively comforting melody. The gentlest of waltzes, a hard-won lesson at its core. Nash and Joni inspired it, but it’s for anyone who’s ever been hurt. 1970.

The Stones coaxing an early version of Sympathy for the Devil into shape, as Jean-Luc Godard captures proceedings on camera. A fascinating look into a song being built. Olympic Studios. 1968.

The Rolling Stones - Sway A devastating hymn to the dark side, with Taylor at his virtuoso best. Drugs, death, depression and dead-eyed promiscuity; the prices being paid for that rock ’n’ roll life. 1971.

So long, Marianne. 1946 - 2025.

“Right lads, I’ve booked us some studio time. Expensive. So, for God’s sake, no mad behaviour. And no drugs” Funkadelic:

Booker T. Jones playing Green Onions solo for a Tiny Desk Concert. Like warm honey being poured into your ears. 2011.

Bob Dylan - Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands Eleven quite astonishing minutes of Dylan circling a woman he can't quite fathom. Fragile, elusive, wounded, formidable. She’s beyond everyone’s reach. Perhaps his, too. 1966.

The Rolling Stones - Waiting on a Friend Lovely stuff as Jagger loiters around waiting on Keith, who sidles down the street with the coldest stroll imaginable, before sauntering off to the pub to get blotto and enjoy a jam session. Tattoo You. 1981.

Derek and the Dominos - Matchbox Eric Clapton and the Dominos, joined by Johnny Cash, sailing through a Carl Perkins rockabilly gem; as the man himself joins them. There’s an impressive collection of talent on that stage. The Johnny Cash Show. 1971.

Joy Division - Disorder Wednesday and Lurch cutting some shapes. Even the Addams Family love Unknown Pleasures.

Buffalo Springfield - Mr. Soul Young sneering at the fame game before real fame had even been tasted, over a bastardised Satisfaction riff. A garage-rock gem on the surreal and shallow nature of stardom. The Smothers Brothers. 1967.

The Rolling Stones with Billy Preston - Outa-Space Billy takes centre stage, laying down a funky Riverdance as Jagger gives the Health & Safety rep nightmares. Cocaine must’ve been helluva strong in the 70s. Live at the Los Angeles Forum. 1975.

The Stone Roses - This is the One Dreamy, yet euphoric, rising from Byrdsian arpeggios into a chorus that could take on the world. A band with an inexplicable magic. They made it all seem effortless. 1989.

Stevie Wonder, alongside the rock group Formula Tre, showing what a powerhouse he was behind a drum kit. Music just pours out of the man. Italian TV. 1971.
