Just last season in the AFC Championship Game, the officials ruled this a live backwards pass in, as far as I can tell, identical circumstances to the ones being used to call this play an incomplete forward pass. Can someone explain the thing that differentiates the two plays? As I see it: 1. Throwing motion starts 2. Hit materially affects the throw (As the rule specifies) 3. Pass goes backwards. One called fumble (like we all know it should be). One called an incomplete forward pass. Anyone have an explanation of how they can coexist within the same set of rules? This is just the first such play I've found tape of, I know there's more (Cousins has one, top of my head?)

This is the problem with the rules analyst as a TV feature. We did NOT need to bring in a rules expert to ask whether the QB got hit in the fucking head here! Bring the guy in when you need to explain something wildly complex. Don't pass the job of commentating off.

So, my problem with this play is inconsistency in the rules. An inadvertent whistle from an official stops a play dead. It can take points off the board: you get a pick six, but an official accidentally blows up before the defense scores... no points. Here, a whistle blows, but you can just pick up a football and be awarded points? I don't see how you can reconcile those.
