Obama wore a tan suit and Fox News set their hair on fire. Now I want you to imagine Obama starting a war that creates a quagmire costing several hundred billion dollars. Imagine Obama trading in his personal account to the tune of $22 billion. Imagine the right wing outrage. We all know what would have happened. Instead these guys fall in line. The hypocrisy isn’t even hidden anymore. It’s just sitting there in plain sight and nobody seems embarrassed by it. That tells you everything about where we are.

Imagine an American president in 2036 or 2040 sitting in front of a $55 trillion deficit. The money isn’t worth anything anymore because deficit spending is unfunded tax liability and the only way we’ve been willing to pay for it is through the most pernicious, most regressive form of taxation available: Inflation. Instead of taxing people honestly, we blow out their bank accounts quietly. You think you have $1,000. It only has $750 worth of purchasing power. That’s how we monetize the debt. That’s why I’m long gold. That’s why I’m long Bitcoin. As the monetary system reinvents itself both of those are part of the answer.

If Trump is disavowing NATO and breaking an 80 year tradition — something’s wrong. If Trump is praising Vladimir Putin, whose entire economy is slightly smaller than the state of Texas — something’s wrong. If Trump is disavowing the 1994 defense agreement where we told Ukraine to give up their nuclear weapons and we’d protect them — the agreement that got him impeached in his first term — something is wrong. He blasts and berates every world leader. Won’t say a single negative word about Putin. Putin owns him. It’s hard to watch as an American but it’s obvious. Why does he own him? That’ll probably come out someday. It’s not just Trump. Right-leaning podcasters taking money from the Russian government to spout their talking points. Republicans hanging out in Moscow, repeating the same lines. The question isn’t whether something exists. It’s what.

Hot take: If you have a pronoun designation on your business card, Americans don't like it. Maybe 10% do, but the other 85% to 90% think it's nonsense. In 2024 there were 10 transgender athletes competing in high school sports across a country of 330 million people. I'm an inclusive person and I genuinely don't care about any of this personally. But Trump took those 10 people and spent $150 million advertising them to swing state voters and it worked. That shows that Americans don't like woke culture. They don't like being told every Hollywood movie needs a representation checklist. This is a socially conservative country at its core, even if those same people want their government services and Medicare left alone. Trump understands that better than anyone on the political stage. The Democrats genuinely don't know what's happening. And until they figure it out, they're going to keep losing the culture war to a guy who reads the room better than all of them combined.

My arch nemesis Steve Bannon, someone I genuinely can't stand, actually nailed this one. He said pay attention to Zohran Mamdani. He’s a great communicator and has a real vision. He understands where people are and how upset they are. And Trump's response is to slap a broad brush on it and call it communism. Which I think is a serious mistake, because when you do that you miss the entire point of what's actually got people upset. Listen to Mamdani's speech, that's not communism, that's Scandinavianism. He wants a regulated capitalism with a stronger safety net. Trump is successfully labeling it something it isn't and a lot of people are buying it. But the underlying anger is real and mislabeling it doesn't make it go away.

Trump told Leslie Stahl something years ago that everyone should hear. She asked Trump he kept calling the media fake news. He said, I do it because I need to discredit you, so that when you say negative things about me, nobody believes you. That is EXACTLY what he’s done. The problem everyone has with him is that most of us grew up with values, ethics, and integrity. That is not Donald Trump. He figured out a long time ago that he can bully his way through any rule and if he keeps pushing harder and harder, people will relent. For most of his life they did, but we must stand up against it.

Trump doesn’t have dementia. I’ll say that clearly. He has a narcissistic personality and the normal infirmities you’d expect at 80. But he’s a fairly vigorous, fairly healthy 80. Don’t underestimate him. Here’s where he’s genuinely unwell. He’s making statements that are nowhere near what a world leader should be saying. Threatening the death and destruction of an entire civilization on social media is a war crime. Threatening a war crime is itself a war crime. Imagine any other world leader saying anything close to that. It would never happen in the first place and if it did, their own party would remove them within hours.

Trump said something outside a press gaggle that I don’t think enough people caught. A reporter called him out on the corruption. He gave three responses. 1. I have the right to do it. 2. He’s not stealing that much. A billion or two billion dollars. Not that much money. Classic Trump. 3. People don’t care. That’s the permission structure. Our collective apathy is what they’re using to justify everything happening in Washington right now. Please stand up and prove him wrong.

People can't figure out how Trump got to the presidency because they've never been in a room with him. If he walked through the door right now — even though we're always fighting — he would be disarming, gregarious, genuinely charming. He calls Newsom “Newscum" publicly and then sees him on the tarmac and says Gavin, are we good? He'll destroy a journalist on camera and then pick up the phone five minutes later. Are we good? That's Trump. You have to understand that about him. He also doesn't like people standing up to him, but he respects it deeply. Carney is blasting him and I guarantee Trump calls Carney more than any other Western leader. He wants to win Carney's approval and because he respects that Carney won't give it to him easily. When he's sitting at a table and everyone is telling him his invisible clothes are beautiful, he's nauseated by it. He comes off the plane and finds someone real and says — can you believe how these guys talk to me? With genuine mocking derision. He craves the pushback. He just can't admit it.

Let me walk you through what happened one hour before Trump announced the five day moratorium on Iran strikes. $1.5 billion in notional S&P E-mini futures contracts. Four to six times normal activity. One hour before the announcement. Simultaneously, $192 million in crude oil futures purchased at the same time. They made between $300 and $400 million dollars off those trades. Trump claimed he spoke to an Iranian official to negotiate the moratorium. The Iranians said that person doesn't exist and the conversation never happened. This is not the first time. It has happened multiple times. He says something. The trade goes on. He says another thing. The market moves. But whatever you call it — they are laughing at you and they are laughing at me while they do it. Hunter Biden sold a painting and Washington lost its mind. These people are making hundreds upon hundreds of millions of dollars trading on information that only exists inside the most powerful office in the world. I think we are dramatically underreporting how much money is actually being made here. This isn't politics anymore. This is a financial operation running out of the White House.

On July 24th I missed the birth of my son. I was in West Virginia with the president. Deirdre and I were fighting. There was no way back to New York. Then I get fired, my marriage is on the brink, I’ve missed the birth of my son, and the late night comedians are coming for me every night. I went to a PR crisis manager. He told me to buy a villa in Italy and come back in 2022. You’re never recovering from this. F*ck that, I went on Colbert, I went on Bill Maher, I faced Saturday Night Live, and I faced the music. Nine years later my son turns nine on July 24th. My marriage is intact, stronger than ever, honestly, because we refused to make it disposable. The firing was the hardest thing that ever happened to me. It also made me more psychologically minded, more empathetic, more human. And you probably wouldn’t know who I am if it hadn’t happened. If you’re going through something hard right now, stay in it. Don’t walk away. The thing that breaks you is often the thing that builds you.

Henry Ford was generally a racist and a bad person, but he understood something our current broligarchs have completely forgotten. He said: I have to pay my workers enough to afford the products they’re building. Give them a house, decent schools, reasonable healthcare. If I do that, they’re not descending on my Dearborn mansion with pitchforks while I eat my caviar. We’ve lost that plot entirely. We have broligarchs who want to be trillionaires and they’re missing the lesson that a deeply flawed man figured out a hundred years ago. Capitalism works, but only if people believe the game is worth playing. Right now they don’t and history is very clear about what comes next.

Let me talk about my marriage for a second. We've been together sixteen years, married twelve. We almost got divorced when I was in the White House. My wife probably hates Trump almost as much as Melania does — and that is a very high standard of hatred. She knew things about him from friends and she really didn't want me to go work for him and we were fighting for other reasons on top of all that. We reconciled because I believe relationships shouldn't be transactional and they shouldn't be disposable. If you love each other and somebody makes a mistake, you can't throw the whole thing away because it didn't go perfectly. No marriage is perfect. Every marriage is a work in progress. But I can honestly tell you we're closer today than we were before any of it happened. That's the only good thing I can say came out of those eleven days.

The dollar didn’t just weaken — it quietly robbed you. Down 28% in five years. My parents bought their house in 1962 for $16,000. Back then, gold was $35 an ounce. That house cost 457 ounces of gold. Today, the house is “worth” $750,000. Gold is about $3,300 an ounce. That same house is 227 ounces of gold — half the real value. Everyone thinks they got rich. They didn’t. The measuring stick got warped. That’s the scam of inflation. Prices go up, politicians get away with it. People confuse bigger numbers with more wealth. A million dollars today feels impressive — until you realize it’s the purchasing power of about eighty grand in 1970. You’re not richer. The currency is weaker.
