Sometimes, a coach loses a game, much less a regional final, and they're ready to hit the showers, hit the road, and not talk much. It was refreshing to see Louisiana's Head Coach Matt Deggs, who'd just lost 19-5 to Mississippi State, after playing in mid 90s temps earlier in the afternoon just to get the opportunity, willing to talk about the game, his team, and even his expectations for next year. If you're fans of Mississippi State and its Head Coach Brian O' Connor, he will remind you of the same candor, plain-spoken-but-well-spoken type of coach who has both affection for his players but expectations of what he asks and demands of them. This is a coach whose team survived multiple elimination games at the Sun Belt tournament, played at all hours and even multiple locations last week, winding up in the championship game. And when offered a chance to deflect the lopsided score with the drain his team might have faced having only a short while after gutting out a win over 2-seed Cincinnati 8-6, he said his team wasn't tired, though. They just ran out of pitching. And, his analogy that "they were going to have to kill us, and they did" was a tip of the cap to his opponent, whom he deemed worthy of a long run in Omaha. Anyway, let's let Coach Deggs say that, and so much more, in his own words. Write it down now, they look like a team to watch in the Sun Belt for 2027. Well, another one run loss, 7-6 to Southern Miss on the road after an 8-7 loss to UCLA on Sunday. You're in it each time, and just can't push it through. What else can you say? To their credit, Southern Miss jumped on Mississippi State early in the game, like they did last year in a 3-0 win. But, to their credit, Mississippi State came back and took a lead. It was back and forth, but in the end... Here are Coach Brian O' Connor's postgame comments. We are not posting any player comments tonight, though. They stood there, took the questions, and answered, but the PA Music was Rolling Stones level, and it wouldn't be fair to you or them to publish it. Fortunately, the volume level was lower when Coach Oak came over. He tells it straight, like he always does, and face it, there are a bunch of tired folks right now ready to head for home and sleep in their beds tonight for the first time in a week. Lipscomb comes in this weekend before many of us head south next week for Biloxi. We're going to celebrate Ron Polk's 50th anniversary of his first MSU game on Sunday, and the season will go on. Tonight was a tough one, but it's a long way to Tiperarie, and Omaha.

I've decided that what is going on right now with the Mississippi State Baseball program is The Curse of Yoknapatawpha. You William Faulkner fans won't have to run to Google, and you old timers will remember the Curse of the Lava Rocks one season in a year when the Bulldogs played in Hawaii. How else to positively explain the five-game SEC losing streak after sweeping the rival Ole Miss Rebels at home? Tonight, it was a 6-2 loss to Tennessee and not getting a hit, much less a run, while the Volunteers put up a 4-0 lead. Not getting a single walk didn't help when home runs and extra base hits did score runs, and the Bulldogs settled down after Duke Stone was roughed up early but then put up zeroes. Here are post-game comments from Coach Oak. The third game is Sunday at 1 pm.
