I grew up during the Civil Rights Movement. That fight shaped me. I’m honored to receive the Phenomenal Woman of Courage Award at the Dr. Alison P. Riddle-Fletcher Women’s Health Symposium. Long before I held public office, I learned what courage looks like. I saw it in every day people who refused to accept injustice. They taught me that progress is never permanent. It must be protected. It must be carried forward. The fight continues. And so do I.

To every young woman I met today, if somebody tries to keep their foot on your neck, stand up and keep going until they have to call you Madam Chair. I know a little something about that. When I entered the Senate, I was told I would never even serve on Senate Finance. Now I’m the first Black person to chair it and the first Black woman elected President pro tempore of the Virginia Senate. I’m proud to serve alongside incredible women and even prouder to make a way for the next generation. Thank you, Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium , for bringing the Joy & Justice Tour to Richmond and inviting me to share my story.

Different backgrounds, one message: they want to be heard before decisions are made, not after. We’ll keep showing up. We’ll keep listening. Because there’s more power in the people than people in power
