Several government efforts were made in India before 2014 to tackle the menace of open defecation. But with little success, as prevalence remained highest at 40% (against global avg of 12%) in 2014. #SwachhBharatMission became a clarion call for public hygiene in India with a singular focus of building toilets for everyone. The impacts have been remarkable- for public health, hygiene and safety of women & girls across the nation. It’s a true tribute to Gandhi ji’s ’Cleanliness is Godliness’ philosophy. #SwachhBharatMission has emerged as one of the most important legacies of PM Modi.
