Our young sister was in court today and confronted her attacker with such courage and strength that it had an emotional and moving impact on all in court and the Judge! In passing sentence of LIFE IMPRISONMENT to Ashby he sited the planning, religiously aggravated and violent nature of the attack and the invasion of her home to commit such a heinous attack! A small sense of relief of justice for our sister, but nothing will erase the trauma of the abuse and life changing experience. Judge William Mousley KC should take serious note of this blunder. The word Kirpan comes from two Punjabi words: Kirpa (mercy, grace, or kindness) and Aan (honor or dignity). It symbolizes the belief that strength and power must always be guided by compassion and moral responsibility. Those calling for the ban on the Kirpan will realise the murder weapon was in fact a Persian dagger specifically engineered to pierce chainmail and heavy textile armour.

While criminal justice has been served against the perpetrator, the wider systemic failures exposed by this case demand immediate, independent, and transparent investigation. A non-statutory or internal review cannot address the cross-jurisdictional failures of the police, the CPS, and the courts. Hopefully all UK politicians on all sides watched or will watch Dabinderjit Singh speak with Sophy Ridge and Wilfred Frost this morning on Sky News so eloquently about a very difficult and challenging issue with the tragic death of Henry Novak. Politicians need to learn from Dabinderjit Singh and recognise the Sikh community has acted impeccably throughout and back the public inquiry suggested by the Sikh Federation (UK) as the police, Crown Prosecution Service and the courts have failed Henry Novak and the Sikh community. Many politicians that have met, know and worked with Dabinderjit Singh have never failed to be impressed by his in-depth knowledge, experience and the ability to connect through excellent communication skills. Civil servants need to engage with the new leadership of Sikh Federation (UK) to deal with Anti-Sikh hate (it will be 25 years since 9/11 in a few months), a statutory Code of Practice on the Sikh articles of faith (that is desperately needed due to ignorance) that was raised by Rob Marris MP in 2005, more than 20 years ago with a Labour Government Minister.

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Anita Anand was repeatedly grilled by Canadian reporters in Mumbai today. It was a car-crash interview as she failed to answer one simple question with a yes or no. She failed to clarify if she did or did not agree with unnamed Canadian officials that stated on Wednesday that Carney would not be travelling to India if the Indian government was still involved in political interference, violence and transnational repression targeting Sikh activists and businesses as she knows there is plenty of evidence and intelligence held by RCMP / GRC and CSIS that this remains a serious and real threat. This missed opportunity to set the record straight now guarantees Canadian reporters will pose the same question to Mark Carney at the press conference on Monday unless a written statement is urgently issued to clarify the false statement made by Canadian officials. Anita Anand’s reputation has been severely damaged as it would have been much easier to distance herself from the naïve comments by the officials.

The following video clip of Rishi Sunak will make many cringe. He is speaking to ANI, a propaganda tool for the right-wing Indian government, and what he says about Narendra Modi, his Hindu faith and the non-existent “Pro-Khalistan Extremism (PKE)” will make many UK MPs and the public uncomfortable. Conservative Ministers have admitted to Sikh representatives the term “Pro-Khalistan Extremism (PKE)” and a dedicated team in the Home Office to address this has simply been invented to appease the Indian government who are calling for extreme action. The Ministers accept the risk and threat from PKE is virtually non-existent. The term was introduced following a Sikh protester taking down the flag at the Indian High Commission in London on 19 March 2023. The Indian government overreacted and responded by dressing down the British High Commissioner in Delhi and removing security. The Conservatives are trying to reassure and draw a distinction between hundreds of thousands of Khalistan supporters in Britain who they accept are legitimately and democratically campaigning for a Sikh homeland and a handful of individuals who they regard as “extremists” who are Khalistan supporters. Apart from the flag incidence the Conservative UK government has struggled to give any concrete examples of extremism, but the disproportionate focus on PKE to appease India is upsetting many UK MPs on all sides, including those in government and the Sikh community. Colin Bloom, the government’s faith adviser, first mentioned the term in a report published in April 2023. Tom Tugendhat, the Security Minister mentioned the term in letters to MPs in June and now the PM has mentioned it in an email to PTI before his visit to India and in an interview on Indian TV. Priti Patel when Home Secretary first mentioned “Sikh extremism” in Britain in a speech in Washington DC in November 2021. She was publicly questioned and failed to provide evidence from the police (arrests or convictions) or information from the intelligence services. Boris Johnson before he resigned as PM was forced to write and apologise in July 2022 as UK MPs on all sides and over 350 Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations challenged him.

It is not only many of the 232 passengers and 12 crew members on board that may have perished, but also those living in the residential area called Meghani Nagar. The authorities must investigate why the Air India plane crashed so soon after taking off. Air India has a poor reputation and track record on safety. If there has been negligence on the part of Air India tough action should be taken to make sure this never happens again.

It appears no one was in the Diwan Hall at the Gurdwara at that time who could challenge the thief. All people of faith and no faith should help identify the thief who has carried out thus disgusting act.
