One of the biggest losers coming out of this cycle will be any L1 blockchain betting its future on fragmented, Layer-2 scaling solutions. Let me explain! The Ethereum ecosystem and several other L1 chains went all-in on scalability via L2s, but missed something fundamental: the utility of a smart contract platform is directly proportional to the amount of interesting shared state a program can access atomically. By fragmenting this state across multiple rollups they've diluted the core utility of their platforms. By cycle’s end, I expect broad consensus around a simple fact: fragmentation equals failure. Scaling Layer 1 is the only sustainable path forward. Already, you’re seeing this shift play out: OG VCs like Haseeb >|<, who initially bet heavily on multiple L2 rollups, are already starting to acknowledge this. Turns out Sam Blackshear was right all along: if your “scaling” plan shatters atomic composability, you never solved scalability in the first place. Bottom line? If you’re not betting on L1 blockchains like Sui, which are built to scale without fragmenting state, you’re essentially betting on obsolete tech.
