#Annamalai "We are still in a mayakka nilai maatram. When intellectual politics actually happens, people will focus on real metrics, numbers & accountability. Probably, you will start asking questions like: 'When you came to power, how many Primary Health Centers (PHCs) were there in rural areas & in these five years, how many PHCs have you improved? How much rural development have you actually done? How many X-ray machines have you brought in?' But right now, we are not in that stage of politics; we are still in that phony politics. A Chief Minister can go & spend ₹7 crore just to open the Mettur Dam water gates. Then, he can give his Christian Dior sunglasses to an old lady who happens to be there, and the entire media will rave, 'Oh, look! He gave away ₹50,000 sunglasses! See what a great man he is!'But nobody talks about the ₹6.5 crore spent just on setting up the event. That is where I am questioning it. I don't mind someone giving away sunglasses. I don't mind that at all. I am only asking: why do you want to spend ₹6.5 crore just to open a gate when the state is already under ₹10.5 lakh crore of debt?The way you live is not my criticism. My question is, why do you need to do this? In this day and age, you can easily do a video conference. You can sit in your office and flip a switch. You could ask 100 farmers to be at the dam, let those 100 farmers open it together, and you can just activate it remotely.Instead, how do you go and open it? You take a private jet from Chennai and land it in Salem. One hour of a private jet costs about ₹7 lakh, so the round trip alone costs around ₹15 lakh. Spending ₹6.5 crore for the entire event—that is not real politics. I want people to question this kind of politics. But right now, politicians have become very phony in the way they act and talk.
