Awkward Taiwan: In probably one of the more surreal commencement speeches of all time, graduates at Taiwan’s Shih Hsin University #世新大學 were told to “End yourselves quickly” if they couldn’t keep their lives in order after they entered the work place. This rather drastic admonition was made by Shih Shin University president Chen Ching-ho 世新大學校長陳清河 during his commencement address to the school’s Master’s and PhD degree graduates. He then went on to tell them that if they could not manage their lives they should exit from the world because the world wouldn’t need people like them. The ensuing uproar has led to calls for Dr Chen to resign. Yesterday he apologized for “had not been sufficiently careful in my remarks” and announced he would take a two month unpaid leave. #Taiwan #graduation #commencement

Taiwan News: In a sad development the government has announced that one of Taiwan’s most iconic sounds will pass into history this July as garbage trucks will stop playing Beethoven’s “Für Elise” due to copyright infringement. At a press conference Taiwan Garbage Department 台灣垃圾署spokesperson Mr Yu Ren-jie 余仁傑 said “While Für Elise is in the public domain, it appears the specific arrangement of the classic we have been playing is copyrighted.” He said the Dutch trademark agency Shietmark had contacted them and demanded royalty payments for use of the jingle. “While the Dutch graciously offered a low rate of 1 USD per day per garbage truck,” he said, “we have over 5,000 trucks across Taiwan, which would cost us NTD50 million per year.” It turns out that a Dutch tourist by the name of Johann van der Smut had uploaded a clip of the yellow garbage truck playing the tune which brought this infraction to the attention of Shietmark. When contacted about this, Mr Van der Smut was apologetic. “My fahza loves Beethoven and I just wanted to bring a smile to his face,” he cried (at least that’s what we think he said). Mr Yu said the government will hold a referendum in May to choose a replacement song but the public will only get to select from songs by Taiwanese artists to avoid possible future copyright issues. “Maybe a song by Jay Chow or GEM would get selected,” he suggested hopefully. #Taiwan #Holland #Dutch #AustinPowers #AprilFools #aprilfoolsday2026 #Beethoven

Sweet Taiwan: This Thread of an in-flight announcement by a China Airlines 華航 pilot has struck a chord with many Taiwanese during this tumultuous lead-up to the Recall Vote on Saturday. As the flight was landing at Taoyuan International Airport TPE the pilot expressed his love for Taiwan and exhorted his fellow citizens to make an educated and loving choice in the upcoming Recall ballot for the sake of future generations, ending with: “Be a thoughtful and responsible citizen and protect this treasure island we love deeply. Come on Taiwan, come on the Republic of China!" 「做個有思辨、有溫度的國民，一起守護這片我們深愛的寶島。台灣加油，中華民國加油！」 The person who posted the Thread wrote: “Sometimes, just one sentence can make people remember the warmth of Taiwan." 「有時候，只是一句話，就讓人記住台灣的溫度。」 #Taiwan #recall #TaiwanRecall #elections #罷免 #ChinaAirlines

This is so denigrating to #Taiwanese: 1) the #Philippines offers visa free entrance to 159 countries & territories. #Taiwan is not one of them 2) If you apply online for e-visa the only country you can choose is the fake “Chinese Taipei” Not Taiwan or even #ROC #TaiwanIsaCountry

How much do Taiwanese love visiting Japan? A LOT Here is a map of which nationality spends the most by Japanese prefecture. Taiwan, with 1.5% China’s population outspends it across the majority of the country. Even though it comes in second in total spend: China: ¥1.7335 trillion Taiwan: ¥1.0936 trillion South Korea: ¥963.2 billion It even beats Korea, a country with twice the population and roughly the same per capita income #Taiwan #Japan #Korea #China #tourism #visitors

Taiwan Traditions: Most Confucian-heritage cultures (CHCs) celebrate Mid Autumn Festival #中秋節 but only #Taiwanese have made outdoor barbecuing part of the tradition. Why is that? This commercial. In the mid 1989’s this soy sauce maker wanted to grow its product line and started aggressively promoting its barbecue sauce. It flooded media with ads extolling outdoor barbecuing which basically created the mid autumn festival outdoor barbecue culture Taiwanese know and love #Taiwan #traditions #culture #MidAutumnFestival

Cute Taiwan: Every New Year’s Eve Taipei 101 puts on a spectacular fireworks show. Last year over 500,000 people crowded around the building to watch, making prime viewing/photography spots very desirable, some being staked out days in advance. But last year quite a few people staked out the wrong building, a nondescript building one block away from Taipei 101, resulting in them missing out on best views of the fireworks (to best see that building you would have to turn you back on Taipei 101). This year that building created a tongue-in-cheek “public service” sign reminding people that it is not Taipei 101 and helpfully providing an arrow pointing to the correct building. (The sign, made from lighted windows on the building, reads “Taipei 101 is that one” with an arrow pointing to the right) #Taiwan #NewYear2026 #fireworks #Taipei101 #台北101 #跨年 #新年快樂

Beautiful Taiwan: Thousands of people participate in the soft opening of the Danjiang Bridge 淡江大橋 the Ziha Hadid masterpiece. Scheduled to open on May 12, the nearly one-kilometer-long bridge will link Tamsui 淡水 and Bali 八里 districts in New Taipei 新北市 across the Tamsui River 淡水河 estuary. Note of procedure: what should be its English name? Danjiang Bridge, Tamshui Bridge, Tamsui Bridge, Tamkang Bridge? #Taiwan #Tamsui #bridges #infrastructure #淡江大橋

An endangered world heritage: Taiwanese hand-painted tiles In this reel workers race to save painted tiles reliefs from yet another traditional house slated for demolition. In the past wealthy Taiwanese would hire artisans to create elaborate tile “paintings” for the front of their homes. These one-of-a-kind works of art showcased the family’s wealth. The home owners also believed they protected the family from evil/brought good luck. This tradition was developed during the Japanese colonization of Taiwan, a blend of Japanese decorative tiles and Chinese themes. Sadly this practice ended after the arrival of the KMT on Taiwan. The ability to create this beautiful artistry has also disappeared as artisans passed away with nobody interested in continuing the tradition. #Taiwan #history #art #tradition #architecture #tiles
