Roy Cooper on Michael Whatley and his ties to a convicted child predator: Michael Whatley needs to look in the mirror. He appointed a child molester who served six years in prison for it, was on the sex offender registry, and above the objections of many members of the Republican Party, to an important position in the party that gave him access to teenagers and children. And it shows you that he puts politics over public safety.

Lawrence O’Donnell: Why do you think North Carolina voters appear to be ready now for a change in the United States Senate? Roy Cooper: I think they want a return to decency. I think they've had enough of this bravado and name-calling. I think they want government to work. What they're seeing now is a government that's leaving them behind and ripping away their health care, and making their grocery prices and utility rates go through the roof. And they want someone who they've seen here in North Carolina—I've developed some trust with the people of North Carolina. They know that I try to work in a bipartisan way, and that I'm going to represent all North Carolinians. I believe that they are ready for change. I believe that they are ready to put in the checks and balances that the framers of the Constitution intended. They are ready for members of Congress and the U.S. Senate to work with this president when they can, but stand up to him when they need to. And right now, the leadership of the House and Senate is letting this executive go wild. And what's happening is the right to vote is being threatened. And we're in a war with no strategy. And we have a $40 trillion debt that's driving up the cost of borrowing. People are tired of it.

Roy on midterm voting restrictions: I think you're seeing a lot of people in North Carolina, particularly on college campuses, are having an "I'll show you" attitude. "You're not going to take our vote away. We'll show you." I went to North Carolina A&T State University, the largest HBCU in North Carolina. They removed that ballot box from their campus, but the students are marching to the nearest polling place and they're spreading the word that it's really important for them to get out and vote in this election because our country needs a course correction. And that's what they can do in these midterms by putting the checks and balances back into the Constitution that the framers intended.

Roy on Michael Whatley's relationship to sex predators: So that's the kind of thing that we're dealing with here. People who pretend to be tough on crime, yet when it comes to politics, they want to protect people who are child predators. This is the same guy who hasn't demanded that Trump fully disclose the Epstein files. This is a guy who has other situations where he's been in — Word of Faith Fellowship — a church that has been accused of having people who have abused children. He's been with them quite a bit. This is the kind of person who is saying one thing and doing another.

Roy Cooper on Michael Whatley and his ties to a convicted child predator: He also says he's tough on crime. Well, look, he was chair of the Republican Party. And you know what he did? He appointed a sex offender who was a child predator, who served six years in prison for it, and who was on the sex offender registry. He gave this man a prominent position over the objections of a lot of people in the Republican Party. He gave that position to him and continued to defend him. And do you know why? Because he could raise money. This does not sound like a candidate who wants to keep people safe. Because in this position, Harvey Lee West… interacted with young people and with minors. This is somebody who is not tough on crime. I'm the only one in this race who's actually prosecuted violent criminals and made sure that they stayed behind bars. I've actually gone after child predators and helped to strengthen the sex offender registry.

Roy on bipartisanship: There are ways to work together. We saw it on the housing bill in Washington. We’ve got to have more people who are willing to sit down at the table, even if they have disparate opinions. When you look at goals, often our goals are shared, even if we are on opposite ends politically. We want a good education for our kids. We want a good-paying job. We want clean air and water. We want quality health care. We all want the same things and we have to be willing to sit down at the table and find ways forward. Find a way to achieve consensus. I did that as Governor time and time again. I want to do that in Washington, and I believe that Washington could use a dose of North Carolina common sense. I'm ready to come and try to provide that.
