Hands down one of the best exchanges between reporters and an NFL head coach I’ve ever seen, featuring Titans HC Robert Saleh and the local media. What started as a simple question about the complexities of Saleh’s zone defense and why there might be some early growing pains turned into nearly seven minutes of incredible insight. Saleh explains why the system takes time to learn but can eventually produce top-five defenses. He breaks down how players learn to attack offenses by understanding what they’re trying to do to them, rather than simply dropping to a spot and defending grass. He also dives into the evolution of his defensive philosophy, drawing from his experiences around Pete Carroll’s Cover 3/Legion of Boom system, Vic Fangio, Monte Kiffin and others. He discusses the key positions that make the system work, his overall philosophy on defense and so much more. I’ve heard DeMeco Ryans speak glowingly about Robert Saleh, how brilliant he is and how instrumental he was in DeMeco’s development as a coach. But I don’t think I fully appreciated what he meant until watching this. Just an incredibly bright defensive mind. And what makes this especially fascinating from a Texans perspective is that DeMeco is essentially building and running a variation of that same defensive philosophy, with some of his own wrinkles. It’s particularly relevant right now given Houston’s struggles with defensive communication and executing its coverage rules. Saleh provides some excellent perspective on why these systems can be so difficult to master, how players eventually develop a deeper understanding of what offenses are attacking, and why that understanding allows them to play faster and more aggressively. Must watch.

DeMeco Ryans opened his postgame press conference following the Texans win in London by giving thanks: “All glory, honor, and praise goes to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” “Just being here in London has been outstanding for our team. … Just thankful and grateful for this opportunity.” He also praised his players for “pushing through to find a way to get us this win.”

CJ Stroud had plenty to say about Marvin Harrison Jr. during Bleacher Report’s 2024 NFL Draft show, shortly after Harrison was selected by the Cardinals. On Harrison’s route running and awareness: “I’ve seen Marv in practice, and that’s where you see guys who are great be great most of the time. When catching the ball, I’m telling you, he does this thing. Before the ball gets to him, he’ll move his body suddenly, the DBs will go to his inside hip, and he’ll shake out. He feels guys behind him.” [Micah Parsons jokingly interrupts: “Pause.”] On whether Harrison would become a Pro Bowler or All-Pro: “You can’t say that right now. You gotta let him be him. I think that’s one of the weird things we do. Let him go and figure it out, figure the NFL out.” On what he would tell Kyler Murray about the receiver he was getting: “He’s getting somebody who’s finna win off the LOS, somebody who can open up and stride deep ball. Usually is a body catcher, which I don’t think is a bad thing in the NFL, but can hands catch. Just give him a chance. He’s a guy you give him a chance, he’s finna do special things. “My big challenge is the OC. Find ways to get him one-on-one. Find ways to get him to show his route running. Not even show it, but dominate in it. “I’m so excited for him. I called him last night, talked to him this morning. One thing about Marv, never gets too high, never gets too low. That’s a great thing to have. “As his career kept going, he kept developing his personality on the field. He’s a dog, bro. He might not yell and talk and do a bunch of stuff, but he’s felt.”

Texans GM Nick Caserio told Seth Payne & Sean Pendergast on 95.7 The Fan that he initiated the Marvin Harrison Jr. trade talks with Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort a couple of weeks ago. The deal was finalized Friday but delayed at Ossenfort’s request. Caserio was adamant that the outcome of the Titans game had ZERO impact on the trade going through.

Jaguars HC Liam Coen on the slick playing surface in London and its impact on the pass rush: “I didn’t feel like we were under a ton of duress either. I think that venue benefits the offense in a lot of ways in terms of the pass rush.” “If we weren’t feeling them, they probably didn’t feel us.” (⏯️)

Texans TE Cade Stover raved about his former Ohio State teammate Marvin Harrison Jr. and his work ethic. Says Marv would catch so many balls that they’d have to tell him to go home. Emphasized that every bit of success Marv has had has been earned through his work. 🎥 Houston Texans

Shedeur Sanders wearing a visor on Quarterback on Netflix allowed Joe Flacco to express his disdain for them 😭 “If you wear a visor it’s for look, you think you look sweet. I don’t want my kids to wear visors either. They’re just annoying, they’re gunna fog up.” Shedeur: “No they’re not.” Joe: “yeah they are. They f***ing suck dude. It’s all about look. When I was a kid, I wanted a visor too. Then I’m like, visors suck.” On his kids wearing one: “I’d let em wear it but I’d tell em ‘You’re a quarterback, you’re f***ing wearing a visor? You look like a f***ing idiot.’”

Jeffery Simmons when asked about needing to get to CJ to limit Nico: “I mean Nico’s a good player. I don’t care about Nico Collins. All respect to him. When you turn on the tape you can see CJ, CJ is a good quarterback, but when guys around his feet & when you assaulting the middle of the pocket he struggles.”

All 12 offensive snaps from Marvin Harrison Jr.'s Texans debut vs. the Jaguars. Just 10 pass plays, but a lot to like: -91.1 PFF offensive grade -3 catches on 4 targets, 34 yards (11.3 Y/R) -All 3 receptions were first downs -3.78 yards per route run -12.3-yard aDOT -1 contested catch -30% of snaps from the slot - +0.51 EPA/play across his 12 snaps (+6.15 total) What stands out to me beyond the production is his physicality. He's a big, physical receiver who consistently beats press coverage and rarely gets rerouted off his landmarks. He also has a really good feel for finding the soft spots in zone coverage. Those are two things I've been harping on Texans receivers needing to improve over the last couple of years. Also some really encouraging effort and execution as a blocker, both in the run game and on passing plays, including Jaylin Noel's explosive catch and run. For a guy who was just traded, had to learn a new offense and traveled across three time zones in the same week, there's a lot to be encouraged about from these 12 snaps.

DeMeco Ryans to John Harris on getting Marvin Harrison Jr. & speaking on the phone with him: “I’m fired up. To add a guy of Marvin‘s caliber, it’s a huge get for us. Huge get for the Texans. I’m fired up for Marvin, when you’re in a situation & it may not be going great, to get a breath of fresh air, going to a new place. I know Houston’s gonna be great for Marvin. Having that prior relationship with CJ, I think it’s gunna go great for him. I’m excited to add him. I know he’s been a big time playmaker. Everyone speaks about how hard a worker Marvin is, I’m excited to work with him. I talked to him on the phone, and he was ELATED. I can’t wait to meet him. I just know he’s gonna to bring great energy to our building.”

DeMeco Ryans had plenty of praise for Marvin Harrison Jr. after his first practice with the Texans today. Ryans credited Harrison’s attention to detail and willingness to put in the work, revealing that MHJ spent his first night in Houston studying the playbook late into the night with assistant WR coach Tiquan Underwood. That preparation allowed him to get a day ahead and fit in seamlessly at practice. Ryans also confirmed Harrison WILL play against the Jaguars, with the coaching staff putting together a specific package to help him play fast without overwhelming him. “Don’t expect him to come out and play all 60 snaps in the game, but we’ll make sure he gets what he needs.” On Harrison’s talent: “He’s a good player. He’s a great receiver. He’s probably been a great receiver all of his life.”

.Dan Graziano asked Azeez Al-Shaair about the defensive mindset after a turnover: “My mindset is it doesn’t even matter. We have this thing called ‘White Boy Wednesdays’ in the weight room where they play rock music. There’s this one song—I don’t even know the name—but I know the part where it goes, ‘In the end, it doesn’t even matter.’”

Sheldon Rankins on Will Anderson Jr.: “He’s getting to that point where he realizes if he wants to shut practice down, he can shut it down. If he don’t want them to get a play off, they won’t get a play off. He don’t want them to get a pass off, they won’t get a pass off. He want a TFL every play, he can go do it. He’s starting to get to that point where he finally realizes like ‘the game is in the palms of my hands’. He’s starting to realize the power that he has in his hands, feet, helmet, all the above & he’s letting it be known everyday.”

Current Commander & former Houston Texan Laremy Tunsil on Houston Texans fans on Boardroom to Ace: “I love DC fans, they really support me. Houston fans was tough to play for. 2024, when I got a false start in the stadium, I was getting booed bruh. I was getting booed it’s crazy. Like have my back, they didn’t have my back. Getting booed is crazy. That’s a tough team to play for as far as fans. Booing is crazy though. They on me, I get it though.”

DeMeco Ryans on concerns about MHJ in AZ: “That’s the great part of being a Houston Texan, all this stuff that happened prior to you coming, it doesn’t matter. I don’t care what people say about you. I don’t work to prove people wrong or to please the opinion of people. It’s about everybody in this locker room. You come here, you can be yourself, show up with a great attitude, bring joy everyday. Guys who love football are going to thrive in what we’re trying to build here in Houston. It doesn’t matter. You can focus on the things that don’t matter and it doesn’t help you, you’re wasting time, wasting energy.”

DeMeco Ryans seemingly challenging his players to make plays post game: “This game is very indicative of what NFL football is about. Ja’Marr Chase, one of their best players, he showed up. Dexter Lawrence was effective all day. That’s where we gotta check ourselves. If you call yourself a playmaker, like where are your plays? Are you making those plays to put the Texans into position to win football games?”
