ᴠ ɪ ɴ ᴛ ᴀ ɢ ᴇ ᴍ ᴏ ᴏ ᴅ Sailors of an unnamed U.S. Navy aircraft carrier take a rare break in the Pacific, late 1942. Torpedo nets form a makeshift pool to keep the sharks out while the crew dives from the hull and climbs the anchor chain for a plunge. British Pathé released the footage in January 1943 as “Aircraft Carrier’s Swimming Pool,” a short reminder that even in wartime the men still found a few minutes to cool off and let off some steam. Such a cool find.

ʀ ᴇ ᴛ ʀ ᴏ ᴍ ᴏ ᴏ ᴅ Michael Paré had one of those faces that seemed made for the movies. In 1983, he landed the role of Eddie Wilson, the troubled rock star at the centre of Eddie and the Cruisers, a film that eventually became a cult classic despite disappointing at the box office. Paré had practically no singing experience when he got the role. The songs were actually performed by John Cafferty, whose band supplied the film’s now iconic soundtrack, including “On the Dark Side.” The album went triple platinum, and Paré returned as Eddie in the 1989 sequel, Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! I’m told that the live performance below is entirely lip-synced to John’s vocals. Either way, he makes it look pretty good! 😅
