Matt Yglesias makes the case that the Biden White House was obsessed with identity but then treated the people it elevated badly, from Xavier Becerra to Karine Jean-Pierre. Was it identity over merit, or something worse? Full episode out now: ranking the worst parts of the Biden presidency. Matt Yglesias on why America stopped trying to "cultivate Americanness." His grandmother was taught to brush her teeth and even ride a horse growing up in the tenements, because that's what Americans did. His argument: The right wants fewer immigrants, while the left is too afraid of seeming cringe to ask for any assimilation at all. Full episode out now: the liberal case for assimilation. Everyone jokes about “middle child syndrome,” but birth order does appear to influence life outcomes. In the "Peer Review" section of our latest episode, Jerusalem and Matthew Yglesias dig into new research on why firstborn children tend to have better outcomes and why the explanation may be less about parenting style and more about something much more basic. “Just get off your phone” might be the modern version of “just quit smoking.” Matthew Yglesias and Jerusalem revisit Robert Putnam’s "Bowling Alone" and debate why American social connection and civic life have declined. What does Spirit Airlines’ collapse reveal about the bigger fight over competition, deregulation, and antitrust? In this clip, Matthew Yglesias literally puts on the tinfoil hat and argues that the debate over airline deregulation is a “tell” for a much larger ideological divide: whether policymakers should use antitrust to make markets more competitive — or use the language of competition to justify bringing back older, more heavily regulated economic frameworks. What happens when work stops being the thing that structures your life? In this clip, Jerusalem and Matthew Yglesias talk about research suggesting that leaving the workforce can speed up cognitive decline, especially for men aged 51 to 64. If retirement can now last 20 or 30 years, what are people supposed to replace work with? Check out the latest Peer Review section of The Argument:

Progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez get a lot of attention but can't always win. Moderates like Andy Beshear usually have a better shot at winning but don't always get the attention. On Pod Save America, Matt Yglesias joins the conversation to debate what the careers of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Rahm Emanuel, and others can teach Democrats about balancing attention with electability. Take a look at the conversation from last weekend's episode. #Moderates #ModerateDemocrats #Democrats #Politics

Why do politicians like Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Zohran Mamdani seem to break through online while so many moderate Democrats struggle? Matthew Yglesias joined Pod Save America to discuss what moderate Democrats could learn from them. His argument is that too many moderate candidates stay in their own bubble. That leaves a huge opportunity on the table. He enouraged them to do the interviews, take the questions, and tell voters who they are and what they actually believe. Historically, voter ID laws have been used to exclude marginalized groups. But today, support for voter ID spans race, age, and political affiliation. The concern is that these laws suppress participation. But what if, implemented well, they actually increased trust in elections? Republicans have embraced voter ID. The question is whether Democrats should rethink their approach.

In this episode, Jerusalem and Matthew Yglesias revisit The Feminine Mystique — the book that helped name a generation’s dissatisfaction and reshape American feminism. But if the book’s argument largely won, why does the story of women’s happiness get more complicated after the fact? Check out the full episode:
