Nishan Velupillay was asked what it means to be the first player of Tamil heritage at a FIFA World Cup. He spoke about his family and pride. For millions of Tamils around the world, seeing the name Velupillay on the biggest stage in football means a lot. 📹 via SBS Sport

A reminder of Vijay’s praise of Prabhakaran whilst campaigning. Politicians around the world, particularly in Tamil Nadu, continue to speak on Eelam Tamils and the independence struggle in the run up to elections. They must be held accountable for their words.

I asked Ranil Wickremesinghe about Sri Lanka’s double standards towards Palestinians and Tamils. He supposedly supports Palestinian self-determination and applauded action against Israel at ICJ. Why not the same for Tamils? His answer – as expected - was a whole lot of nothing.

May 2009. Tamil Eelam. This is what the No Fire Zone looked like. These images are seared into the psyche of the Tamil nation. The entire world watched. Some even took notes. 17 years on there has been no accountability. No justice. No answers. We have not forgotten.

📹 Rare footage from captures the moment Thileepan passed away. Doctor Sivakumar goes to examine him. He puts a stethoscope to Thileepan’s chest and listens for signs of life. There was no breathing and no heartbeat. He places the stethoscope on the ground and walks to Thileepan’s feet. He clasps his hands together and bows down before them. After 12 whole days of no food and no water, Thileepan’s body had finally shut down. The tens of thousands of people who had gathered to witness his historic and nonviolent struggle for his people, burst into tears. Grief and anger had swept across the Tamil homeland. Every single home was in mourning. The loss was monumental.

I’ve spent years writing about Eelam Tamil politics, our losses, our resilience. In all that time, one absence has been particularly glaring. Tamil cinema has never allowed us to be the protagonists of our own story - not in any meaningful way. Kollywood can sometimes have an exploitative relationship with Eelam Tamils. We’ve been portrayed as sympathetic refugees at best, criminals as worst. There are a few films about us, but never have any been made by us. ‘Neelira’ is a step in a different direction. Directed by someetharan and produced by karthik subbaraj, it is the first Eelam-centred film to be made within Kollywood and released globally. Set entirely in Jaffna and directed by an Eelam Tamil. That is not a small thing. The Indian censor board and wider film industry in general is still extremely problematic. But for those who grew up seeing stories told about us but never with us, this film is something to hold onto. An Eelam story on a Kollywood platform, with a global release. Go watch it. A fuller piece with my thoughts is coming soon. #Neelira #Eelam #Kollywood #TamilCinema #TamilEelam

Tamil Eelam has always had stories worth telling. For the first time, an Eelam film has gone through Kollywood to reach the world. Neelira - directed by someetharan, produced by karthik subbaraj - is the first of its kind. This one matters. Watch it. #neelira #tamilcinema #eelam

. Callum Macrae asked this incisive and timely question on how the lack of accountability for Mullivaikkal may have contributed to a global disregard for international law - including in Gaza. Ranil responded with nothing but more bluster. It’s honestly just plain insulting.

I’m glad Sasikumar chose to address many of the issues I raised in my piece on this last month. India claims to be the world’s biggest democracy. Yet its film censor board continues to clamp down on freedom of expression. Even a toy tiger. That has to be challenged.
