In November 2025, Viggo Mortensen met Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican and presented him with a small gift. A particularly fitting encounter considering the Pope’s appreciation for Tolkien.

Still can’t believe we never saw the Easterlings in combat. So much footage exists of them. (Maybe in the 30th anniversary 🤞)

Since everyone is already highlighting Pelennor, I’d like to add that Gandalf and Éomer arriving at Helm’s Deep also eclipses this scene in every single way.

One of the coolest facts from Helm's Deep is that the moment when the Uruk-hai start pounding their spears into the ground was inspired by the stuntmen! Filming took place in freezing temperatures, so the performers slammed their spears into the ground to stay warm between takes. Second-unit director John Mahaffie saw them one night and suggested Peter Jackson incorporate it into the film.

On 11 October 1999, the very first scene filmed for The Lord of the Rings trilogy was this iconic moment in The Fellowship of the Ring. Where Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin hide beneath a tree to escape a Ringwraith. Filmed on Mount Victoria in Wellington, New Zealand, 27 years ago today.
