One of the biggest differences between the book and The Return of the King is the Mouth of Sauron. In Tolkien’s book, the Mouth of Sauron isn’t a monstrous creature with a grotesque face. He’s a Black Númenórean - a descendant of the King’s Men of Númenor, the same people who fell under Sauron’s influence during the Second Age. He entered Sauron’s service while he was still young and eventually became the Dark Lord’s most trusted lieutenant. By the time of the War of the Ring, he had forgotten his own name. Sauron gave him a new identity: the Mouth of Sauron, because he spoke with his master’s authority and served as his chief emissary. When Aragorn and the Captains of the West arrive at the Black Gate, the Mouth of Sauron rides out under a flag of truce. Instead of fighting, he tries to break their spirit. He presents Frodo’s mithril shirt, Sam’s sword, and other belongings as “proof” that the Ring-bearer has been captured, hoping they’ll abandon all hope before the battle even begins. Peter Jackson kept the basic idea of the scene but completely redesigned the character. In the film, he’s portrayed as a hideously deformed figure with an oversized mouth, making him look more like a monster than a Black Númenórean. The movie also has Aragorn kill him on the spot, something that never happens in the book. In Tolkien’s version, the Mouth of Sauron survives the encounter and retreats behind the Black Gate after Gandalf exposes his lies and rejects Sauron’s terms.

In Ralph Bakshi’s animated film The Lord of the Rings (1978), there’s a hilarious little mistake that somehow made it into the final cut. 🎬 During the scene where Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are chasing the Orcs, the live-action actor used as the rotoscoping model for Aragorn, Trey Wilson, actually trips over his own sword. Since the film was heavily based on live-action footage that was then rotoscoped into animation, the animators ended up tracing that exact movement, meaning Aragorn literally trips over his sword in the finished film. John Hurt provided Aragorn’s voice, while Trey Wilson’s physical performance helped create the character’s animated movements.

In the book, Aragorn’s use of the palantír is calm and deliberate; he shows Sauron Andúril and reveals his true name. Everything in the text is simple and controlled. In the film, the moment is turned into a darker, more intense, and visually dramatic confrontation. In the end, both versions highlight Aragorn’s rise as the true heir of Isildur.

Wētā Workshop’s Uruk-hai armor was designed to match the brutal, industrial world of Isengard. Instead of looking refined or carefully crafted like the armor of Gondor or the Elves, it was made to look crude and mass-produced, as if it had been forged for Saruman’s growing war machine. Underneath the metal armor, leather pieces, straps, and rough fabrics were used to help the actors and stunt performers move more freely. The Uruk-hai Scouts relied even more heavily on leather armor for mobility. The armor and helmets were also marked with Saruman’s iconic White Hand, painted directly onto the pieces to give the entire army its distinctive look.
