Polaris not being SEEN south is because it's just so far away that perspective makes it sink out of sight. The farther south you go, the more it drops toward that vanishing line until it's too low to spot. Airs thicker near the ground, full of haze, moisture and junk so when Polaris gets low enough in the sky- say, from spots like Australia or Chile- it's not just perspective shrinking it; the murky atmosphere swallows it up. It has hit the vanishing point, lost in the haze of a wide plane stretching out.
