Apple celebrates its 50th birthday next week, which is a reminder that “Forrest Gump” has Hollywood’s best angel investment ever: Gump and Lt. Dan early in Apple. They get to Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak before the April 1976 launch and prior to first official $250k check from Mike Markkula, who briefly owned 1/3rd of Apple for his investment. That would value at Apple at $750k. Since Gump and Lt. Dan were unsophisticated shrimp guys instead of tech investors, they probably got pinched on valuation by Jobs and paid $100k for 10% of Apple. That would be worth $180m at the Apple IPO in 1980 ($1.8B market cap). An 1,800x return in 5 years. Gump is a loyal dude so probably sold everything when Jobs was booted in 1985. On the other hand, he thought Apple was a fruit company and is financially illiterate…so Gump is likely still holding that stake, which is now worth $300B+ (my calculator broke trying to figure out the ROI).

Take any produce (cucumber, tomato) and first farmer to market fetches multiples of the avg. price and gets all media fanfare. Strawberries are an extreme example: the traditional growing season starts in Spring (April-May). But the race to get to market first has made strawberries a winter-time specialty in Japan (particularly around Christmas). To grow strawberries in freezing weather, farmers build specially-designed greenhouses and use a lot of fuel (eg kerosene) to grow in the new peak season of November-February. Add on the competition between farmers to pick out the best-looking pieces and some single strawberries will sell for $100+. Japan’s strawberry growing season is now so out-of-whack that the country imports the fruit during the summer. *** $19 strawberry: NYT again on the strawberry beat with the Japanese growing story:

Never forget when MythBusters covered a Ford Taurus in modelling clay and scooped out 1,082 dimples to see if the aerodynamics of golf ball dimples could scale to a car. It worked: a dimpled Taurus was more fuel efficient than the standard one (to make sure the cars weighed the same, the team put the same amount of clay in the trunk of the car on the non-dimpled tests). Across ~300 episodes, the Golf Dimple Car was one of their most surprising results. Just an absolute got damn classic and probably the most visually absurd of their experiments.
